Amongst the NBA stars who boast an impressive collection of signature four-wheelers, Klay Thompson’s name certainly appears at the top of the list. In fact, each vehicle he owns is so near and dear to him, that the 34-year-old once outright stated, “Hell to the nah, u crazy rook” when Jonathon Kuminga asked if he could take one of them out for a spin. Now, having lived a millennial’s nostalgic childhood dream, Thompson may end up once again denying his teammates from eyeing his cult vehicle.
Earlier today, the Maverick took to his official Instagram account to share a series of stories with his 17.1 million followers. It highlighted a brand-new classic Volkswagen Brazilian Van occupying the free space in Thompson’s house. For those who may not be aware, many Scooby-Doo fans have associated the iconic ‘Mystery Machine’, the land vehicle of the Golden Crew, as being based on the 1978 Volkswagen LT 40.
It turns out, Thompson thought so as well and wanted everyone to know about it. He took the iconic four-wheeler for a joyride, with the Scooby-Doo theme song playing in the background. If anyone needed any further clues, Klay even went ahead and wrote “The Shaggin Wagon” at the bottom of the story, a tribute to the goofiest character: Shaggy.

Klay Thompson has never talked much about what his favorite cartoons were while growing up. On the contrary, his impressive car collection has been extensively covered by the media. From a BMW i8 Roadster that most people can only get to drive in their lifetime by playing Forza Horizon 4, to a Range Rover Velar whose speed can go up from 0 to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds, the former Warrior certainly lets himself indulge in the modern era’s newest inventions.
However, the Volkswagen isn’t the only classic vehicle in the player’s collection, as Klay Thompson also owns a Lincoln Continental, which most highly belongs to the 1960s. With one of its models popularly used as a Presidential limousine by John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, and two later presidents, the car can go from 0 to 60 mph in 10.2 seconds, with a top speed of just 118 mph. While it may not be the fastest, it certainly carries a vintage look and is as 60s as it can get.

Does Klay Thompson's new $700K boat make him the coolest NBA player off the court?
Have an interesting take?
The four-time NBA champion’s recent purchase certainly shows how far some people would go in taking a unique approach to appeasing their inner child. However, this wouldn’t come up as too big of a surprise to Klay Thompson’s longtime fans. After all, while he has never quoted Scooby-Doo in any of his interviews, he has used cars to bring a special part of his, and people’s childhood, to life.
Klay Thompson went “donuts” with his car because of Mario Kart!
A February 2019 report by The Athletic’s Jayson Jenks provided a glimpse into what Klay Thompson was like whilst growing up. As highlighted by his former teammates, Abe Lodwick and Charlie Enquist, video games were certainly a big part of the future NBA star’s childhood. As a result, when he started playing basketball at the college level and earned a decent wage, the player decided to do what he earlier used to do with a controller, in real life!
By highlighting how Klay would definitely have fun, Charlie Enquist revealed “He loved to go and do donuts with his car when it was snowing out. Or drift on turns. We played a lot of ‘Mario Kart,’ so on turns, he would pretend his car was Mario Kart and drift around the turns. Every video game was for a naked lap. So, if you lost, you had to strip all the way down and run around the house. I’m pretty sure I’m the only one that ever paid up for that.”
Mario Kart was among all the fun, which is the most frustrating game at times, that almost every person growing up indulged in at least once. However, not everyone tries to relive their childhood dream by taking to the road in real life and letting out huge amounts of smoke whilst leaving behind 360-degree loops. Then again, not everyone is Klay Thompson. Who knows, maybe the NBA star may end up taking his own version of ‘The Mystery Machine’ to hunt down some imaginary monsters during his off-season time.
