Is Jeff Bezos the game-changer the Celtics need to dominate the NBA?

The Boston Celtics are looking forward to hanging their 18th championship banner. After a long struggle, the franchise finally brought the title back home. Of course, the squad even had the best record in the league and had improving role players. But with increasing value, keeping players right after they have a championship under their name gets more expensive. And that is exactly where the majority of owners of the franchise gave up. The owner, Wyc Grousbeck, made the team available for sale. However, in recent reports, fans might get a hint at who may be the next owner, as also highlighted by Celtics legend, Kevin Garnett.

Jeff Bezos, the renowned businessman and founder of Amazon recently sold $5 billion worth of Amazon stocks. Why is that? There are many reasons for this transaction, but some believe he is pursuing a sports franchise. Garnett’s recent story, captioned, “What if tho”, is indeed a valid thought. When it comes to the Celtics, the franchise is worth over $5 billion. The math works out considering Bezos’ recent move, but it can’t be said for sure. Jeff tried to acquire the NFL’s Washington Commanders in February 2023 but wasn’t successful.

This could be his chance to purchase the Celtics who have a considerable payroll next season. Following Tatum‘s massive $314 million contract alongside Holiday and White‘s extension, the Celtics estimated payroll comes out to be around $450 million after taxes. This is well above the second apron limit and the franchise will be paying an expensive luxury tax. If the billionaire is on board, chances are, the franchise’s finances may be managed well.

On the other hand, the salaries will increase after the upcoming season and so will the tax. The league’s new second apron limit tells a lot about what’s to come in the future. But as the Celtics await their new owner, the franchise isn’t fully stable even after winning a title after 16 years.

Back in 2008 when Boston won its 17th title, things were much simpler. Players weren’t earning hundreds of millions of dollars. The luxury tax limit at the time was set at $71.15 million. Not only that, but the game seemed to be more enjoyable. However, years later, the average salaries have seen an increase of over 100%. Kevin Garnett who was the key player behind the Celtics’ championship in o8′ was earning $23 million. For a player of his caliber adjusted to today’s game, Garnett would be looking at a five-year deal worth over $230 million.

Along with him, Paul Pierce was also getting paid a big bag. The franchise’s rebuild after their 08′ run has come a long way. But it is safe to say that Celtics’ value is justified but they still need an owner like Grousbeck. Not to mention, Grousback did a pretty good job on his part. He brought the team to where it is today, having purchased the franchise for $360 million in 2002. It can’t be said for sure whether Bezos is a man of interest in managing sports franchises but it will definitely be a highlighting move if he considers buying the Celtics.

What are your thoughts on Bezos’ recent move? Do you think he will buy the Celtics? Let us know in the comments.
