The women’s basketball team also took the French in the gold medal game. Following the men’s national team winning the gold medal yesterday, the USABWNT had quite the game against France. It was a constant back and forth between both squads, with the game stretching down to the last possession. Going into the fourth quarter, the Americans were up two points. Of course, at this point, the game was neck to neck but as they approached the final seconds, Team USA managed to extend the lead to three, with under four seconds left. And that’s when France’s Gabby Williams pulled off one of the biggest ‘What Ifs’ in international women’s basketball history, similar to Kevin Durant‘s.
With just 3.8 seconds left, the French brought the ball upcourt. Gabby Williams with barely a second left let it fly just inside the arc and baked the shot. The bucket was counted as a two, as France was inches away from tying the gold medal game. Williams and her teammates were as shocked as anyone witnessing how close she was to sending the game to overtime. This reminded fans of Kevin Durant’s turnaround shot on the Bucks in the 2021 Conference Semi-Finals. On the other hand, it was definitely one of the most unfortunate moments for the French as they got the silver medal.
UNBELIEVABLE ENDING IN PARIS. 😱

Nevertheless, Gaby Williams had quite the game against the Americans. She put up 19 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists. Playing against some of the best players on the planet, Williams proved herself to be on the same level as the WNBA players. This performance of her will definitely attract certain GMs and it is possible to see her play on the WNBA hardwood soon. However, this game will definitely be one of the biggest highlights of her career.
The French were quite close to outplaying the Americans in the third quarter itself. While they compensated for the same in the fourth, it just wasn’t enough. Twitteratis on the other hand were quick to point out the similarity between KD and Willaims’ last shot attempt. Would the French have won the gold medal game if Williams had made a three? Well, it would’ve been a condensed 5 minutes, and considering how balanced both the teams are, it could’ve been anyone holding the gold in the end.
Fans on Twitter brought back Kevin Durant’s Game 7 dagger
Back when Durant played for the Nets, he led Brooklyn to the Conference Semi-Finals against the Bucks. The series that would go on for a Game 7 showdown came down to the final seconds. Kevin Durant drained a turnaround shot on PJ Tucker to tie the game. However, his foot was just about an inch away from a three which would’ve put the Nets up by one with just a second left. KD and the Nets were on fire and would’ve been the favorites to win the East Finals against the Hawks. Regardless of the hypothetical future outcomes, Williams got to know what it was like to be in KD’s shoes back then.
What’s your perspective on:
Did Kevin Durant's actions really sabotage Gabby Williams' Olympic dreams, or is this just fan overreaction?
Have an interesting take?
This particular fan wanted Gabe to “talk to Kevin Durant about that feeling”. Well, the Slim Reaper knows a great deal about the same feeling, but then again, he is quite busy celebrating.

On the other hand, this Twitterati hinted at wanting KD’s opinion on the same shot. “KD can relate to Gabby Williams lol”, wrote the fan. It would definitely be exciting to know Durant’s opinion on Williams’ performance, especially her final shot against the Americans.

Gabby Williams was pretty emotional following the game, sharing the moment with her teammates. Fans were also sad to witness such a moment at the end of the day. Of course, the squad gave their all in the final game while being just inches away from keeping their gold medal hopes alive.

In the end, the French who were also deserving of the first place walked away with Silver, whereas the Americans took both the gold medals. It was a great run for both the men’s and well as women’s national teams of France and the States. On the brighter side, the Association needs to go no further if they are looking to add international talent. The Olympics was enough of a competition to give an idea of the players around the world who are deserving for a spot in the league.
