Athletes, given the fleeting nature of their professions, need to maximize their impact in and outside the game to be remembered. And it seems Kevin Durant understands this perfectly, using his platform to help others whenever he can.
What we’re astounded by today, though, is his most recent act of generosity, which occurred when he returned to Washington D.C. to play the Washington Wizards. Born in the city, Durant’s friends and family are from the capital city, 40 to be precise. Well, he ensured that every one of them had the best view and experience of the game.
Now, most players would get their close ones tickets and be sorted. Maybe a few boxes or courtside tickets for their inner circle. But KD isn’t like most players. Durant ended up getting suites for all of them. Yes, all 40 of them. With a suite averaging around $3000 and accommodating around 12-18 people, KD spent around $9000 on this.

While that is meager compared to his salary and earnings, the generosity of this gesture cannot be understated. And his friends and family made it known, showering him with hugs and kisses post-game. The entire crowd was all over KD, with someone even handing him their child to carry and pose for a quick picture. That child will have one amazing story to tell his friends when he grows up!
The entire scene was extremely wholesome. Especially when Wanda Durant, KD’s mom, tugged on his arm and, without a word, Kevin bent down to give his mom a hug and an affectionate peck on the cheek. It’s great to see this side of the players we all follow and idolize. And you will have a greater appreciation for his altruistic nature once you learn about the Durant Family Foundation.
Kevin Durant is on a mission to develop the neighborhood he grew up in
Since 2013, the Durant Family Foundation, established by KD and his family, has worked towards helping the less fortunate and affording them opportunities that would otherwise be hard to come by. And on the Out the Mud podcast, KD revealed how it all began.

I bought a building right across the street from the apartment complexes I grew up in. It’s like an after-school program. So I grew up here in the apartment complex, my middle school was right next door, and then the high school was right next door so all of those kids that’s living in that area going to that school, they go right across the street to my after school program,” KD said on the pod.
Yes, it’s true! KD purchased an entire building in his neighborhood in Prince George’s County, Maryland, to start an after-school program. The said building is now called the Durant Center, established in 2019. It offers a variety of programs and courses for the youth to take advantage of. Some of their programs include STEM, entrepreneurial leadership, and workforce development.
KD hopes to expand and influence other communities to start similar programs through this venture. However, even if he doesn’t manage to expand, he will still have done a lot of good for the community.
