It’s a shame to see Kevin Durant‘s efforts not even being rewarded with a play-ins position. What’s funny is that it’s not something he could do on his own either. After the 76ers, the Suns’ season is arguably the most disappointing. It’s no surprise that HC Mike Budenholzer has been relieved of his duties. Phoenix has spoken of KD’s potential exit after Coach Mike’s firing. But after seeing his recent tweet, that exit might as well be confirmed.

Durant’s known for being active on his socials. It’s very rare for a man of his stature to have that quality. But it does provide some A+ content. This time though, his reply to national NBA writer Shane Young on X that sent the fans to a state of confusion. I don’t think anyone expected him to even divulge in conversations of the topic, nevermind replying to comments talking about his exit out and out.

It’s clear that the Suns are not everyone’s favourite franchise to be in right now. It seems all too directionless. Mat Ishbia fired Mike Budenholzer, making this the third change at the helm in 23 months. They cited ‘necessary changes’ needed after going 36-46 and missing the playoffs in his only season. And despite the millions of dollars invested and big-money superstard brought into the team, 11th was far from ideal. KD knows himself that a change is needed.

Even at the tender age of 36, his 26.6 PPG ranks 6th in the NBA charts this season. He’s only played 62 games this season is due to an ankle injury that cost them much later on. But by then, their fate was already decided. There was nothing his presence on the court could’ve done about it. “We wish we had more W’s to pile on top of that to make the whole chemistry-brotherhood thing sound better, but regardless of the losses, I think our bond as teammates has grown,” said Kevin Durant after their HC was fired.

But the latest developments do point towards that brotherhood being broken prematurely. The Knicks seemed like the favourites to deal the blow to the Suns. But after questions raised over the likelihood of the move, it might not be happening.

Kevin Durant’s move to Knicks might be in jeopardy

The Slim Reaper back in the concrete jungle where dreams are made of? Yes please! After a sad spell at the Nets, a second chapter filled with redemption is much needed in NYC. The Knicks face the Pistons in round 1 of the playoffs. But they’ll be ready to throw the kitchen sink at Detroit to avoid a deja vu. The 2024 summer trades of Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns were meant to be statements of intent. This made the goals clear- anything lesser than the Eastern Conference finals is deemed as a failure. If that does end up happening, Kevin Durant could be the answer. Or will he?

ESPN analyst Brian Windhorst has asked for a temporary pause on the rumours. “Before I answer this, I just want to say it’s going to be hard to read the Durant situation until we see the playoffs play out,”Windhorst said. “You could see a team surprise lose in the first or second round and wake up in midday and say, ‘We are Kevin Durant away from winning it.’ So the market for him in a month could be different than now.”

There’s added history to this, though. Back when Durant was on the move in the 2019 off-season, Manhattan-based Boardroom CEO Rich Kleiman aimed for KD to be the key to the Knicks’ puzzling rebuild. But his decision to join the Nets came to much of his dismay, claiming that the Knicks were ‘not cool’ to watch or play for at the time. Only time will tell where KD will end up.

You can just tell that the 2025 NBA off-season is bound to be a blockbuster. Kevin Durant on the move will spark a lot of interests league-wide. Of course- you won’t want to miss out on a future Hall of Famer. But whether that team will be the Knicks is hard to say right now. I guess this adds more of a spice to the playoffs mix. The MSG will be watching intently.
