Is Kevin Durant right about NBA players not worshipping Jokic? What's your take?

If you thought that the fighting was done after a glorious Team USA victory, think again! After leading the charge for the 95-91 win along with Stephen Curry and LeBron James, Kevin Durant is fighting it out on social media. And the topic of controversy is Nikola Jokić. While Jokic earned a lot of praise for leading Team Serbia to splendid gameplay, Durant had issues with a Nuggets fan on X.

The Denver faithful had plenty to hear from Durant, as he showed massive support for Jokic. But what’s the crime here? The fan was American, yet supported Serbian Jokic. The fan tried to press Durant if he hates Jokic, the best player in the world as per the fan, an angry Durant charged at the fan saying that he’s respected among the NBA fraternity, even when they don’t “worship” him.

“To all you nuggets fans, nobody gives a f**k who yall lames believe is the best player in the league,” Durant wrote on X.

“Players got major respect for Jok, we don’t worship him like yall do but most are in awe of his brilliance. Trolling you cornballs for rooting against us is apart of the game. Deal wit it.”

And this wasn’t the end of it. At 5 AM in Paris, Durant was up responding to another American fan, questioning them, “Where u from?” over the fact that they feel Serbia would be proud of the things Nikola has achieved so far at the Olympics.

The Phoenix Suns star diminishing Jokic’s standing in the domestic league comes as a bit of a surprise. After all, it was Durant himself who went viral last year for claiming: “He’s (Jokic’s) a one-of-one. Nobody like him in the history of the game. He’s able to do pretty much everything on the basketball court. His teammates love him, plays at his own pace. He can score from all areas, he’s been dominating.”

Have an interesting take?

There is no denying the fact that Kevin Durant doesn’t respect Nikola Jokić. After all, aside from the year-old remark, their bond was reflected when the two on-court rivals shared a brief hug and talked in the aftermath of the Semi-Final game. However, in moments of national pride, the American may believe that his fellow citizens should stand united and support their home team instead of wavering and supporting the opposition.

Fortunately, even though the support for Team USA may waver from time to time, it still doesn’t change the fact that Kevin Durant and co are in the Finals, and Serbia isn’t. On an individual level, Kevin Durant did his part in bringing the team to that point.

Kevin Durant’s final quarter contribution helped Team USA get the better of Nikola Jokić and co

Fans who were singing the praise of Nikola Jokić had a legitimate reason to do so. After all, the Serbian went all-in during the matchup against Team USA, adding 17 points to the overall score through his 7-17 field goals, 7-11 two-pointers, and 3-4 field throws. Along with Bogdan Bogdanović and Aleksa Avramović, Serbia secured a lead in the first quarter and held on to it until the final minutes of the game. As USA’s chances started to look bleak, the trio of Kevin Durant, LeBron James, and Stephen Curry rose to the occasion.

While LeBron secured a triple-double to his name, Curry scored a major chunk of his 36 points during the final quarter by dropping back-to-back three-pointers. Durant, on his part, did not add much to the overall score, as he only made 9 points during his 24 minutes on the court. However, the player made up for his bleak offensive with his stellar defense, blocking the key scorers from gaining the ball and dropping it through the hoop. During the final 56 seconds of the game, USA was leading but barely by 91-89. In an attempt to confuse the opposition, Curry was made to be the one who would take the shot, but it was Durant who got the ball and used it drop a jumper.

A repeat of the USA-France game from last year will be the ultimate test for Kevin Durant. Hopefully, he does not get upset if some fans on social media start favouring Victor Wembanyama, or even Rudy Gobert, instead of the national squad.
