The Real MVP has a great cause in her hand, amid her son’s star-studded NBA career. Every loyal NBA fan would know Kevin Durant‘s mom, Wanda Durant. She can be often spotted at the courtside of Slim Reaper’s games. Notably, she came to the limelight after KD’s iconic MVP acceptance speech. Looking at her son’s millionaire status, it’s easy to assume that Mama Durant has had an easy lifestyle.
But Wanda recently broke the myth and highlighted the struggles of NBA moms along with her to create a “safe space” with other moms. Currently, Kevin Durant is rocking the world at the Paris Olympics and Mama Durant, who is also in the French city, found time for an interview. Speaking with Andscape, Wanda opened up about her confined special group dedicated to the NBA moms.
When the interviewer asked her if she would receive calls from rookie players’ mothers for advice, she said, “I do. I bear along with other well-known and less-known mothers. Lucille O’Neal, Ray Allen’s mom, Gerald Henderson Jr’s mom… all of us are a group of women who believe in the sisterhood of the mothers and we need to be a safe place for the younger mothers to come and vent.”

Wanda Durant didn’t stop at that. She went on to reveal the reason behind the requirement of the space space where the ideas are exchanged. Mama Durant continued, “I realized that even though my family and friends may have been along with our journey, they don’t understand the intricate details of what it is that we go through. And sometimes they just assume that because our sons are wealthy and are millionaires that we don’t have any problems.”
Moreover, she further added, “We needed a place to confide and to covet one another where we can be vulnerable and talk about some of the things uh that we face and even sharing the joys.”
Kevin Durant’s mom, “the real MVP”
If one speech that could inspire moms around the world even after a decade, that’s Kevin Durant’s MVP acceptance speech. The superstar has spoken about how his single mom struggled with two kids at a very young age and found their way out in time. Speaking of it at the MVP speech, KD said, “You kept us off the street. You put clothes on our backs, food on the table. When you didn’t eat, you made sure we ate. You went to sleep hungry, you sacrificed for us. You the real MVP.”
The end punch received a roaring cheer and Wanda could be wiping off her tears. Fast forward to now, she turned towards the rookie players’ moms with open arms and promises to provide a safe space. Moreover, Shaquille O’Neal‘s mother, Lucille, also had similar popularity during her son’s active days. Above all, Lucille wasn’t afraid of opening up in front of the camera. In fact, she even opened up about her drinking problem and also opened up about how she got over it.
