The Phoenix Suns were in desperate need of a blockbuster trade and they had their eyes set on none other than Jimmy Butler. Initially, the offer on the table was Bradley Beal, but when that fell through, a surprising name emerged in trade talks— Kevin Durant. This could mean that the superstar’s future with the team is now hanging by a thread.
The plan was to involve a multi-team trade that would reportedly send Durant back to the Warriors while Jimmy Butler would end up with the Suns. However, the deal was crushed when KD refused to be a part of it. This could create friction in the Phoenix locker room, with a messy breakup on the horizon, predicted Brian Windhorst. The ESPN insider said on The Hoop Collective, ” I think it’s unpredictable what will happen for the next few months because it’s the nature of the sport, but I think right now it’s reasonable to forecast that Durant will be breaking up with the suns in the summer.”
While the action wasn’t visible in this trade window, Windy believes it could unfold in the coming months. “He didn’t break up with them today, but it doesn’t look good for the long-term forecast because he was really frustrated,” the reporter stated. “I spent a long time today with people involved with this situation, people from Miami, people from Golden State, people from Phoenix, other people and I would just say that the biggest thing Kevin Durant was upset about, I think, was not knowing he was involved in trade talks.” And Durant’s frustration could very well lead to issues for the Suns in the long run.

What made things worse was being a player of Durant’s stature and not having a clue that the Suns were secretly making moves to trade him. Ultimately, the team didn’t make any major changes during this trade window.

Surprising Kevin Durant trade talks led to Phoenix missing out on major moves
Initially, it seemed like the Suns wouldn’t trade Kevin Durant, given he was the only player with two championship experience on the team. However, the situation shifted when his name started floating in trade talks. And what happened in the end? Not only did the team end up on the losing side of the trade, but they also strained their relationship with Durant.
“So the thing about it is that the Suns ended up not getting anything,” Windhorst said. “They made one trade today, and it was a salary dump trade, sending Jusuf Nurkic to Charlotte. They didn’t improve the roster, and meanwhile, you know, Miami and Golden State made other moves.”
While trying to catch the bigger fish, they stumbled and are now likely to lose the one they already had in the bucket. Meanwhile, other teams made the right moves at the right time to improve their rosters, while the Suns didn’t make much of an impact, adding only Cody Martin, Vasilije Micic and a future pick.
