With his 11-point performance in the quarter-final against Brazil, Kevin Durant shattered WNBA legend Lisa Leslie’s record to become the highest-scoring American athlete in Olympic basketball history. But instead of boasting about his accomplishment, KD kept a humble approach, “Records are meant to be broken, so somebody will come along and do the same to me.” Despite his Hall of Fame-worthy resume, KD has had a similar unselfish demeanor throughout his career, which even causes his mother Wanda Durant to howl during live games.

Sitting down for a detailed interview with Andscape, Wanda was asked how Durant has maintained his humility on Team USA during the Paris Olympics. She replied, “I think it’s really his temperament, his personality, and he doesn’t play basketball for the accolades.” Even though he is considered one of the most lethal scorers in league history and has two Finals MVP trophies to show for it, Wanda revealed that winning an individual award was never her son’s priority.

Moreover, sometimes even Wanda gets agitated with how unselfish KD can be on the court, “Even though I wanted him to shoot, he was passing the ball. And I’m howling at him from the stands ‘SHOOT IT!’ but you know, he knows what he is doing.” Although KD is the all-time leading scorer on Team USA with 503 career points at the Olympics, he had no issues coming off the bench for the betterment of his team. “My focus is on trying to win this gold.” He remarked. Sure enough, he even tells his mother the same thing when she asks him to shoot instead of making the right play, “If I don’t ever get the highest score, then I’m okay with that as long as we winning.”

Kevin Durant is one win away from making history

Although Kevin Durant doesn’t prioritize individual accolades, he is so skilled that he ends up winning them anyway. After breaking Lisa Leslie’s scoring record in the quarter-final, he will again have an opportunity to create history on Saturday by becoming the only male athlete with four gold medals in Olympic basketball history. Currently, Carmelo Anthony sits atop that list with three gold medals and a bronze. But KD could overtake him by winning his fourth straight gold medal if Team USA defeats France in the finals.

And to ensure Team USA’s victory, KD is reportedly being moved to the starting lineup for Saturday’s game while Jrue Holiday is expected to come off the bench. Maybe, Steve Kerr took this decision because the last time these two sides met in the finals of the Tokyo Olympics, Durant was the highest scorer of that game with 29 points and led Team USA to an 87-82 victory. So, he is expected to do the same this year as well. Maybe this time, Wanda will not have to worry about Durant passing the ball as Team USA will need all the scoring they can get from the two-time champion.
