The Denver Nuggets’ title win last season showed the effectiveness of meticulously planning a roster capable of winning the title rather than splurging the cash on multiple superstars. The Nuggets have begun the new season in a similar manner, currently holding the top spot in the Western Conference with eight victories in nine games. Notably, they are on a winning streak, having triumphed in four consecutive matches.

Their title credentials were tested when they faced off against the Golden State Warriors. The Nuggets emerged as winners in a close-fought game which ended 108-105 in favor of Denver. Post-match, coach Michael Malone singled Kentavious Caldwell-Pope out for praise for his performance.

The Denver Nuggets have carried forward their title-winning momentum into the new season. They have already defeated the likes of the Warriors, Lakers and Mavericks. They have further established themselves as the title favorites by dominating other challengers. After their victory against the Warriors, Michael Malone awarded the Defensive Player of the Game (DPOG) to KCP. While being cheered on by his teammates, KCP accepted the award while quoting famous music producer, DJ Khalid. He said, “Hey, hey like DJ Khalid said, another one”.

The success Denver has attained so far is closely tied to the environment that Michael Malone has established within the team. On top of that, Nikola Jokic makes the game look so easy. He has started the season in red-hot form, maintaining an average of 29.1 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 8 assists. But a hamstring injury has sidelined Jamal Murray for 3-4 weeks. However, the Nuggets have enough firepower to cope with Murray’s injury. The Denver Nuggets have demonstrated that methodical roster construction is more successful than the trend of assembling super-teams. A trend that has been prevalent for the past decade.

NBA’s super-team era

The NBA has witnessed the emergence of a “super-team” era over the past decade. Franchises aimed to stack their rosters with multiple high-profile, often superstar-caliber players. This era was marked by an emphasis on star power and the pursuit of championship glory by pooling elite talent. Teams like the Miami Heat, with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh, and the Golden State Warriors, featuring Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Kevin Durant, exemplified this trend.

While super-teams were formidable on paper, they generated debates about competitive balance in the league. Critics argued that they could stifle competition and overshadow the league’s depth. Nevertheless, the super-team era left an indelible mark on the NBA’s history, with moments of dominance and memorable championships.
