The Minnesota Timberwolves suffered a massive blow ahead of tonight’s game against the Indiana Pacers. Their superstar Center, Karl-Anthony Towns, suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee and was ruled out indefinitely due to the injury. KAT’s absence raises major concerns for Minnesota as it could hamper their historic season and championship aspirations. However, a recent update on Towns’ injury has given some hope to the Timberwolves fans.

According to NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski, KAT will undergo surgery to repair his torn meniscus and will be re-evaluated in a month. Towns is expected to return to the lineup early into the playoffs. That is great news for the Timberwolves because these injuries usually require a much longer recovery time. According to injury analyst Dr. Nirav Pandya, Towns is likely to undergo a partial meniscectomy. That procedure is usually reserved for smaller tears with poor blood supply. So, even though the upcoming surgery will “repair” KAT’s torn meniscus, it is likely not a true repair that requires sewing the torn meniscus together. The original procedure needs a recovery time of 4-6 months and would have ended Towns’ season.

The Timberwolves cannot afford to lose Towns for the rest of the season. He is having a career year and has helped Minnesota stay on top of the Western Conference standings. Towns is averaging 22.1 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 3 assists. The 4-time All-Star has also strengthened his claim at the title of best shooting Big Man in NBA history. Towns is shooting lights out from the three-point line at a career-high efficiency of 42.3 percent. Minnesota needs Towns in the lineup to reach their maximum potential.

The Timberwolves held their own in Karl-Anthony Towns’ absence

Even though the Timberwolves were missing KAT in tonight’s Pacers’ clash, they pulled off an amazing 113-111 win over Tyrese Haliburton and Co. Anthony Edwards took the scoring responsibility on his shoulders and went off for 44 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. He also had an insane game-saving block in the final seconds. Minnesota’s second star Center, Rudy Gobert, also did a great job keeping up with the Pacers’ fast pace. He finished with 18 points, 14 rebounds, and 3 blocks.

Tonight’s win proved that Minnesota has a deep team and can hold their own amid the absence of their star players. Even if Towns recovers according to the reported timeline, the Timberwolves might have to play a few playoff games without their star Center. In that case, they will need Anthony Edwards and Co. to perform like they did tonight to hold off their opponents until KAT returns from injury.
