The Warriors lost a tough one to the Clippers on Sunday — and with that, they’re officially Play-In bound. But if you were watching closely, something else stood out: Jonathan Kuminga never touched the floor.
No foul trouble. No injury. Just… didn’t play?
It came as a bit of a surprise, especially given how crucial Jonathan Kuminga has been for this team. Sure, he’s struggled a bit since returning from that 31-game injury — putting up 12.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.3 assists over 15 games — but to sit out entirely? In a game this important?

Afterward, Steph Curry spoke up with a message that felt more like big brother wisdom than a post-game soundbite. “Just to be ready,” Steph said when asked what he hopes to see from Kuminga in the future. “The test of a young player in this league — especially with our team — is that you never know when your moment will be there, the brightest and the highest of moments. So… it wasn’t his time tonight. Against Memphis, it could be a game where he makes his presence felt. Don’t let noise outside of the locker room — the tension that might come from it — distract you from your ability to make an impact when your number is called. So, saw this summer, DNPs all over the place — you gotta be ready.”
It’s clear Steph still believes in JK’s potential — and wants him locked in, not discouraged. But belief from a teammate is one thing. Minutes on the floor? That’s up to Steve Kerr.

Steve Kerr explained it was more about rotation choices, “We’ve just found a, you know, a group, since Jimmy got here, that we’re pretty comfortable with… Both he and JC have been really impactful players for us. That doesn’t mean they’re out of the loop going forward — it’s just, this is how this game played out.”
The message? Stay ready — because things move fast in the Bay. And they need Kuminga to increase their chance for the playoff.

Kuminga’s next opportunity in the Playoffs
Kuminga’s chance to make an impact could come sooner than expected. After sitting out against the Clippers, the Warriors now shift their focus to the Memphis Grizzlies. With both teams battling for playoff positioning, this could be the perfect opportunity for Kuminga to step in and make a difference.

Steph Curry weighed in on Kuminga’s potential role against Memphis, saying, “Whatever the game calls for, coach makes the decision, and you understand when certain combinations are out there, especially if it’s JK. He can make his presence felt in the paint. He’s had his games where he’s attacking the glass and made that a point of emphasis if he’s out there.”

Although Steve Kerr left Kuminga on the bench against the Clippers, the Warriors still need him. The Play-In Tournament is right around the corner, and every game counts. Kuminga needs to be ready when his number is called. As Curry said, “You gotta be ready.” The clock is ticking, and Kuminga must take full advantage of whatever opportunity comes his way.
