While Team USA has cruised to the semi-final of the Paris Olympics, Joel Embiid has struggled to make an impact on the international stage. Followed by a disappointing 4-point debut against Serbia, the former MVP faced the ultimate disrespect when he was benched for the entire South Sudan encounter. But what raised even more concerns was his sudden ankle injury during the quarter final against Brazil. Aware of his injury history, NBA legend Kenyon Martin claimed that Embiid might have made a huge mistake by participating in the Olympics.

Discussing Joel’s disappointing showing in Paris on the Gil’s Arena podcast, Martin firmly stated, “No. I don’t think he should have played. I already said he shouldn’t have f**king played no matter what.” And a major reason for Martin making the claim was Embiid’s brutal meniscus injury on his left knee that he suffered during a game against the Warriors earlier this year. “I think he should have rested, worked on his lower body, got strength in his legs. Get his stuff and get ready for the season.” The NBA legend remarked.

Although Joel did undergo surgery to repair his injured meniscus in February, he returned to action earlier than expected, hoping to help Philly make a playoff push. While he averaged 33 points and 10.8 rebounds in the first round series against the Knicks, Martin believes Joel couldn’t have stayed productive because of his health had Philly advanced any further. “I don’t think he could’ve played another round of basketball. Not at that level.” And you combine the injury concern with adjusting to a completely new environment of playing FIBA style basketball. It shows exactly why Embiid has been struggling in the Olympics. “I think it was a mistake.” Martin added.

Joel Embiid suffers another injury in Paris

After facing humiliation in the first two games, Embiid finally found his groove in the group stage game against Puerto Rico as he went off for 15 points. Then, he was having his best performance of the tournament in the quarter final against Brazil as he had scored 14 points on five of six shooting in just twelve minutes. ‘We will finally get an MVP calibre performance from Embiid.’ Many wondered. But disaster struck after Embiid sprained his ankle during a play and was forced to sit out the entire second half. And considering his recent past, every fan was worried about the big man’s health.

However, head coach Steve Kerr clarified after the match that the injury might not be too concerned, “He’ll be fine… Mildly sprained ankle, so he was out of the second half, but Joel is really playing well.” Although it is uncertain if Embiid will be a 100% heading into the semi-final against Serbia, Kerr’s update has raised people’s hope. That’s because everyone wants to witness the battle of the bigs between Joel Embiid and Nikola Jokic in Paris. But that wouldn’t have been possible if Embiid had not participated in the Olympics.
