Is Joel Embiid's $190M contract a smart move for the 76ers or a risky gamble?

Joel Embiid created history for the 76ers in the previous season. He set a career-high with 70 points, breaking Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain’s 76ers record of 68 points. Surely, the 7x NBA All-Star would be an asset for any team. But as much as we know, Embiid’s unwavering loyalty lies with Philadelphia. With almost two years left on the contract, speculation grows about a possible extension.

The Sixers are willing to offer Joel Embiid a three-year, $193M (approx.) contract extension deal. If Embiid accepts this, he would have to decline his $59.0 million player option for the 2026-27 season. But if he declines to sign the extension, then new doors will open. The Philadelphia 76ers could offer better deals with clauses up to five-year eligibility and a $345M max deal. At the same time, opportunities in other teams could also pop up. What do the basketball pundits think?

Speaking on The Lowe Post podcast, Zach Lowe and Bobby Marks discussed the prospects of Embiid’s Sixers loyalty. “He’s [Joel Embiid] eligible for three and 190, or he could opt into his contract and sign for two and 132. By doing that, he would actually earn an extra $2 million here.” Bobby Marks laid before us the two paths Embiid could take with his team. “I would expect a deal to get done with Embiid in the near future here. And I think it will certainly be at max money.” Of course, a hooper like the former MVP is a rare catch. Especially when Embiid is particularly inclined towards Philadelphia, the team should and must utilize their chances.

However, Joel Embiid & Co. must make their decisions before the season begins. Once the 2024-25 season rolls in, Embiid will become ineligible for any extension discussion. Meanwhile, given the injuries, how long will the 76ers likely invest in Embiid? Moreover, will any other team choose a 37YO Joel after 5 years? Some questions need serious consideration in light of the contract debate.

Why should both Joel Embiid and the Sixers come to a contract extension agreement?

Recently, ESPN’s Ramona Shelbourne noted an important point. “He knows he has to win. But being happy and having players around him that want to be there, that have all chosen to be there that’s something he’s never had before.” As you can guess, she is talking about Joel Embiid and his scenario with the Sixers. The Olympian has been playing with the team since forever, and nothing has budged his conviction to clinch the trophy. However, due to his injuries, Embiid has missed games and has never crossed the ‘hurdle’ named Conference semi-finals.

Moreover, the players around Joel Embiid, namely: Paul George, Tyrese Maxey, and others have the potential to solidify the Sixers’ position in the NBA. So, if not winning but at least passing the thresholds of the semi-finals could be a beginner for the team. It’s been 41 years since the 76ers won the title, so, Joel Embiid is hungry for the trophy. But why should both parties agree upon the extension decision? The vital point here is Embiid’s injuries and age. Both factors loom at large, which could be slightly problematic in the upcoming days. Signing an extension would be the safest and easiest route for both parties.

First, Joel Embiid will get his final chance to make the most out of his NBA contract. He already has $215M in his account so far, and if he decides to wait for two more years an additional $106M will make its way to him.  Second, Embiid is undoubtedly one of the most lethal ballers on the court. So, having the veteran in the team, the 76ers would benefit. With improved off-season trades and plans, the team is doing fairly well. Therefore, disrupting the system would surely be a bad idea.

Ultimately it will all come down to what Joel Embiid and his team will decide. But, given the relationship both parties share, an extension is most likely to be announced. Moreover, the 30YO’s loyalty towards the team will go a long way to reach the final target- the NBA Championship trophy.
