With the Warriors turning into a dynasty in the last decade, they have constantly stuck to their strategy of trusting proven superstars over young promising talent. And that led to them not giving too much importance to the draft in recent years. While this strategy has worked well for them so far, Lacob might be forced to choose a different path because of his core roster aging and Klay Thompson on the verge of leaving. Lacob pursuing Paul George in the open market doesn’t look like he is ready for a change.

Although the Warriors might have needed it the most this year, tonight was the first time in seven years that they did not have a draft pick in the first round. And it was partially their doing as they lost their initial 14 pick to Portland because of a 2019 trade, leaving them with only the 52nd pick this year. Discussing their sticky situation on 95.7 The Game radio, Evan Giddings warned Lacob about his pursuing proven players strategy not working anymore, “The draft this year can also potentially symbolize a new direction, should they (Warriors) choose it.”

While the Warriors have reportedly expressed interest in offering Paul George the four-year $221 million max contract he desires, the move would mean that Lacob wants to stick to his win-now mentality while Stephen Curry is still playing at an elite level. However, it might be more beneficial for the Warriors to invest in their young players who they can develop over the years for a chance to potentially form another Championship caliber team. “They now have to use this draft or these two days to decide what the new direction is going to be.” Giddings added.

With this new approach, Lacob could have made some moves tonight to get his hands on one of the first-round draft picks, but unfortunately, no deal was struck by him. However, with one more night left in the draft, Lacob could consider Giddings’ advice and take the Warriors in a completely new direction by investing in young prospects tomorrow.

Paul George might not be able to solve the Warriors’ problems

Another reason why Lacob should consider developing younger talent instead of pursuing superstars is because Paul George might not be the solution to their problems. Yes, he is one of the best two-way players in the league and a bonafide superstar. Just last season, PG averaged 22.6 points along with over five rebounds and nearly four assists. However, one problem that persists with him is his age. At 34YO, PG is very likely past his prime and maybe that’s the reason why the Clippers are not willing to offer him the max contract he desires.

And while Paul’s addition will improve the Warriors’ chances of winning, the window to win another title will remain very small because of his age. Moreover, Lacob is already dealing with an age problem with Draymond, Steph, Klay, and CP3, all in the later stages of their careers. Although it will be a tough pill to swallow for the Warriors, they might have to accept that their days of winning another Championship with this core group might be coming to an end. And they will likely have to start planning for a future without them immediately if they want to remain successful.
