As teammates for the Dallas Mavericks, they’ve partnered on the court for action. But now, one is coaching one of the most successful NBA teams. Meanwhile, the other is bringing master gameplay for the Brooklyn Nets. Brownie points to you if you’ve guessed these anons to be JJ Redick and Dorian Finney-Smith. Besides, the former teammates are about to reunite in the current trade market scenes.
But before we get into the trade deals, the Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick shared his experience with DFS. Well, it’s no secret that the veteran 31-year-old forward brings the fun element to the court. And to a great extent, Redick too tells us the same narrative. Speaking on The Old Man & The Three podcast, the 40-year-old shared:
“The one guy, you know, I just gotta shoutout ’cause I love watching him play. I’ve played against him now for a few years and he does so many things that just don’t show up in a box score and that’s Dorian Finney-Smith. Or as he’s affectionately known as Dodo. But, Dodo is just… he’s just an awesome player and, he’s a player that can fit on any team in the NBA. I think he’s incredibly valuable, a great defender, hustles, and makes all the plays.”

But you know what’s surprising? Dorian Finney-Smith just like JJ Redick hasn’t received his All-Star tag in all these years. Nonetheless, his skills on the court are undeniable, and it’s time for him to join the Lakers. What? Well, the 17x championship-winning team has shaken hands with the veteran, parting ways with their 28-year-old guard!
Lakers reunite JJ Redick with ‘Dodo’, sacrificing D’Angelo Russell and more
Can Dorian Finney-Smith and Shake Milton become the pieces the Lakers are missing to win their 18th championship? Maybe or maybe not. But LA is dreaming big. JJ Redick would be a happy coach to acquire DFS whom he knows from his days as an NBA player. So, what’s going on?
The Los Angeles Lakers shook the NBA with a blockbuster trade. D’Angelo Russell, Maxwell Lewis, and three second-round picks are heading to Brooklyn. In return, the Lakers snag Dorian Finney-Smith and Shake Milton. ESPN’s Shams Charania broke the news. He reported: “The Los Angeles Lakers have agreed on a trade sending D’Angelo Russell, Maxwell Lewis, and three second-round picks to the Brooklyn Nets for Dorian Finney-Smith and Shake Milton.”

Rob Pelinka made a bold move, trading expiring contracts to Brooklyn in exchange for stability and potential. Russell’s $18M and Lewis’ $1.891M (team option) contracts head East as Brooklyn rebuilds. In return, the Lakers land Finney-Smith ($15M this season, with a player option) and Milton ($2.875M annually for two more years). Meanwhile, JJ Redick & Co. have reportedly agreed to send their second-round picks of 2027, 2030, and 2031 to the Nets.
Thus, it’s an extremely calculated gamble, trading short-term for medium-term value, as the LA Lakers eye consistency and Brooklyn eyes the future. Meanwhile, HC Redick seems to be satisfied with the deal as he’ll reunite with his former teammate and thus recreate the power on the court like the good old days.
