The Lakers are undefeated in the JJ Redick era! Yes, with all eyes on the rookie head coach, he picked up his first regular season win on opening night, and that too against a solid Timberwolves squad. While the offense looked extremely fluid in JJ’s new system, the Lakers displayed a major weakness in one key department: their three-point shooting. However, Redick was adamant that it might not have been entirely the team’s fault and plans on escalating his concern to Adam Silver.
As LeBron James and Co. shot an abysmal 5 of 30 from deep range, Redick believed that their poor shooting was partly because the ball used in the game was brand new and had not been worn in at all. Obviously, players are used to shooting with a ball that has been previously used because it’s usually harder to get a good grip on a new ball. Sure enough, JJ plans on filing a complaint about it to the league office. And while many thought he might be joking, Redick said with a smile, “You think I’m joking? I’m neurotic.”

Obviously, JJ is obsessed with every minute detail related to the game, which was evident when he was a player and later when he became an analyst. So, it is not surprising that if there was really a problem with the ball, then JJ is going to address it. Even the Wolves shot only 13 of their 41 long-range attempts all night. However, that could also be because players are still getting used to the flow of the game after a long summer break.
But even with the shooting struggles, he was able to achieve what no Lakers head coach had achieved in the last eight years. He finally ended the jinx for Jeanie Buss by getting their first win on opening night since 2016. Yes, the last time the Lakers won their opening game was eight years ago, on October 26, when they defeated the Rockets. For perspective on how long ago that was, LeBron was still playing for the Cavs, and the Lakers were led by a young core of Julius Randle, Brandon Ingram, and more. So, what changed tonight?

Sure enough, JJ’s new system seems to have come like a breath of fresh air for the Purple and Gold franchise. From the moment the game began, the rookie head coach ran several set plays that led to easy buckets for them. And even though their deep-range shots were not falling, they were able to penetrate the defense with their high IQ plays.
After the game, LeBron even revealed the key reason behind the team’s success, “I think it was our attention to detail. We had a great game plan and our attention to detail throughout 48 minutes was at an all-time high. So, that resulted in us getting this win.” Then, there was also the dominant 36-point performance of Anthony Davis that set the tone for the rest of the team. With the jinx broken, JJ has had an amazing start to his coaching career. And once the three-pointer issue is fixed, the Lakers might become a legitimate threat in the West.
