When JJ Redick was given the head coach’s seat at the LA Lakers, he brought keynotes for the team to follow. The 40-year-old knew what was expected of him and knew his predecessor, Darvin Ham’s shortcomings. So, his priority was to unite the divided squad first. To achieve that, Redick needed to establish his authority over their leader, something he succeeded in doing, highlighted LeBron James‘ former teammate.
On The Draymond Green Show With Baron Davis, Green asked ex-Laker Rajon Rondo to share his thoughts on how Redick performed as a head coach. The 38-year-old believed Redick was doing a great job, particularly in helping Anthony Davis return to his strength area. However, Rondo emphasized the most important point, “He’s got the captains there, you know, Bron. Obviously, they have a great rapport already. So just having that grace and understanding.”
Rondo hinted that much of the credit behind Redick for having earned the respect and trust of his team goes to LeBron. “He’s able to coach him as well, I think,” the 2-time champion added. “You’ve seen a couple of times where they saw JJ might have been on LeBron, he’s not combative in that matter, but he’s able to be coachable. And when he may be doing that, stand his ground, the players see that, and I think that’s allowing them to be like, okay. We believe in this guy.”

However, LeBron had his differences with Darvin Ham last season. Per reports, there were instances when LeBron disregarded his instructions and instead called plays himself. The duo often had courtside clashes that were out in the open. For example, when Ham didn’t ask for a challenge, the 39-year-old expressed frustration. During timeouts, LeBron often dismissed Ham’s guidance, claiming he already knew Ham’s strategy. However, with Redick, it’s different. It wasn’t just LeBron, other players also reportedly disagreed or took jabs at Ham.

When J.J. Redick speaks, LeBron James listens
Redick’s approach towards LeBron has been different, and what helped was his existing bond with the 4-time champion. In contrast to last season, LeBron now has a stronger bond with his head coach and listens to Redick’s sideline advice. A recent video from the Lakers vs. Jazz game captured LeBron paying close attention to Redick’s instructions.

This clearly shows the coach’s influence on the team, as even the best player intensely follows his directions. Despite the ups and downs in results and the criticisms surrounding his hiring, Redick seems to be a stronger and united unit compared to what Ham had. Redick also aims to get the Lakers back on the championship track.
