There was always curiosity with regard to Jimmy Butler from the beginning of the season. The coveted guard didn’t have an extension and his tense relationship with Pat Riley suggested the 2024-25 season could be his last in Miami. However, the latest developments claim Vice City might be listening to trade offers for the deadline. Likewise, the veteran guard who has led the Heat to two NBA Finals had his rumored picks.
Charania reported competing teams, in particular the Mavericks, Warriors, and the Rockets to be Butler’s preferred destination. However, according to the New York Post, neither of them is a top target for the 35-year-old. In fact, for a long time, there have been whispers about him joining the Brooklyn Nets. And they report the Heat starlet is extremely fond of playing in New York.
However, the same can’t be said for the Nets. The Post claims GM Sean Marks isn’t willing to offload valuable assets in exchange for an aging star such as Butler. The only form of optimism that exists is Jimmy Butler choosing to sign with the Nets as a free agent. However, even that isn’t as easy as it looks.

“Brooklyn is and would remain his first choice to the extent that he’s fine with playing out the year opting out and signing there as a free agent” the Post heard from a source close to the Heat cornerstone. Aside from opting out of his $52.4 million contract next season, Butler may need to take a significant pay cut. The Nets could opt to use their $60 million free space to go after a long-term superstar rather than Butler, who has shown some decline at 35.
But even with the reports of the Miami Heat listening to other offers for the deadline, does it make sense for any team to take Jimmy Butler?
Jimmy Butler may not leave Miami until next season
In the wake of Shams Charania’s report, there has been a lot of activity. Notably, a fiery tweet from Butler’s agent Bernard Lee claimed the reports were ‘false’. Furthermore, even head coach Erik Spoelstra expressed there being no grounds behind the reports, given the Heat has regained consistency with Butler back from injury.

Then there is the side of the story that makes sense for everybody.
The Warriors have actively searched for the right star to add next to Stephen Curry. During free agency, they went after Paul George and Markannen. However, the desperation isn’t to splash their current resources to create a star tandem. With Butler making $48 million this season, the Bay would need to dish out significant assets to make a trade possible. The loss of depth at this point in the season may not be the best play.
The same goes for the Dallas Mavericks and the Houston Rockets. While they are teams that are thriving in the West, taking on an expiring contract could significantly derail their season. For context, the Mavs would need to send Klay Thompson, PJ Washington, and Naji Marshall to match Butler’s salary. All of them are invaluable contributors that would nullify the gravity of a trade for Butler.

The basic expectation when adding a star performer such as Butler would be to heighten their chances of competing. That’s only possible when teams have the leverage to dictate the terms of the contract and don’t lose the championship foundation they have created. Hence, even if the reports are indeed true, the pool may not consist of competing teams that have found a successful formula this season.
The logical move would be to approach Butler in the offseason when he would be a free agent and willing to adjust his salary since he has claimed, “I don’t care about the money”. With the possibility of getting Butler for cheaper open for next year, do you think any team should make an immediate move for the relentless competitor? Let us know your views in the comments below.
