Is it time for Jeanie Buss to gamble on Quincy Olivari and bench Gabe Vincent?

It’s never a dull day in Jeanie Buss‘ Lakers nation. Despite their 120-115 victory over the Spurs, the post-game chatter was in plenty and mostly on the negative side. Rather than celebration, there were concerns, one of which involved their misfiring point guard, Gabe Vincent.

Despite receiving significant minutes (averaging 17.8 minutes per game), Vincent struggled to make a real impact. Even on Friday night, he failed to live up to the expectations and his lackluster performance attracted plenty of attention, though not the kind he hoped for. Growing impatient with the Nigerian guard, the Lakers fans are now urging franchise president Jeanie Buss to swap Vincent for Quincy Olivari.

The topic gained momentum following the G League match-up between the South Bay Lakers and Santa Cruz Warriors, where Quincy was declared the top performer. Sharing a post displaying the 23-year-old’s 36-6-5 stat line, a Lakers fan page tagged Buss and wrote, “Add Quincy to the Lakers roster and send Gabe Vincent back to the G League.”

Vincent was previously with the Miami Heat’s G League affiliate before joining the Lakers this season. He has appeared in all 12 games for the LA side, but couldn’t score more than 6 points in a single game. Averaging only 3.2 points, with fewer than one rebound and assist per game, his performance has done little to improve his standing. Meanwhile, when Quincy was part of the Lakers’ squad during the preseason he impressed with his 22-point performance in their last game against the Warriors, which justified his eligibility.

Lakers Nation has a clear demand for Jeanie Buss

Even Lakers Nation host Trevor Lane believes “it’s time” for Jeanie Buss and Rob Pelinka to pull the trigger with Quincy. His two-way contract gives the Lakers the flexibility to add him to the roster whenever they feel he’s needed. One fan agreed with the suggestion, stating, “He can take all of Gabe’s minutes.” Although Vincent has more experience than the Georgia-born Quincy, he has yet to showcase the level of play the Lakers need to make a strong push as a championship contender this season.

Anthony Irwin also weighed in to show his support for Quincy. Amazed by the youngster’s performance in Friday night’s G League game, the Insider stated, “The Lakers are going to have to find room for this guy before some team swoops in on him.” Quincy’s one-year contract with the Lakers wouldn’t allow other teams to snatch him, but without the security of a more permanent role, he could slip away to another franchise next season. And given his current performance, other teams would likely show interest in acquiring him. So that’s a warning for Jeanie Buss to heed.

Someone commented on the post with a suggestion to Buss, “We basically need to trade just to open up roster spots. At this point, I don’t mind Rob overpaying on a good trade,” they wrote. With this being a do-or-die season for Pelinka, it’s a viable option, especially since the Lakers are lacking a solid point guard as both Vincent and D’Angelo Russell have struggled to deliver consistent numbers.

The latter even rooted for Quincy by saying that he is too good to be in the G League. After watching Quincy dominate against the Salt Lake City Stars last Saturday, Russell was genuinely impressed. Speaking to the media about his conversation with the young guard, he confessed, “It honestly looked like he was too good for being out there, respectfully.” Surely that reached the ears of Buss as well, who may now consider giving Quincy a longer look. The Lakers may need to experiment with fresh talent, as LeBron James and Anthony Davis wouldn’t come to the rescue every time.

The question now is whether Buss and Pelinka will call up Quincy for a more permanent role or continue giving Vincent more opportunities. Do you think he could don the Purple and Gold jersey? Share your thoughts below.
