After winning 4 NBA Championships and entering the Hall of Fame, Shaq has explored the world of business only to leave a permanent stamp of brilliance. Accumulating a net worth of $450 million, Big Diesel has launched elaborate ventures aiming to bridge the gap between the rich and poor, while also helping the country grow. But this journey required motivation and drive that he found in the feeling of jealousy.
On the podcast, the Hall of Famer was questioned about a business deal he struck with Authentic Brand Groups. Draymond revealed that people introduced him to ABG as “this is who Shaq just partnered with, not this is who Shaq just sold his company to.” This statement piqued the Warriors star’s curiosity. He wondered why Shaq partnered with the company instead of taking all the money. Following this, Shaq walked him through the business process and claimed that he was jealous of LeBron James.
For the longest time, Shaq has found motivation in jealousy. He stated that he was jealous of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson as he wished to play like them. “I’m jealous of Bron (James). He is almost a billionaire and I am not,” he added. When an individual is jealous, it’s easier to hate – well it’s just a human tendency. But, for Shaquille O’Neal, everything is different. He processed and converted the feeling of jealousy into a positive one. He said, “Instead of taking that jealously and turning into hate, it turns into motivation.” So what did Shaq do with this motivation that helped him not hate LeBron?

Shaquille O’Neal wants his name to live forever
The Big Diesel took a trip down memory lane. When considering retirement, Shaq realized that people could forget him in a few years, but the Big Man wanted to live forever. With this drive, he studied how Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe earned money post-death. After this, he pitched his brand to two companies. He said, “I met with two companies, hey I wanna. This is who I am, and this is what I built. Me, Perry, Mike, and Leonard Aramato. This is what we built. Would you be interested in doing a partnership with?”
This is what Authentic Brands Group made him an offer and, in return, Shaq asked if he could invest in ABG. “They wrote me a big cheque, I wrote them a big cheque… basically what this does is just make sure my name lives forever,” he added – thereby clearing Draymond’s question.

Leonard Aramato, who Shaq mentioned in the quote above, claimed that Big Diesel has homeboy marketing instincts in an exclusive interview with EssentiallySports. He revealed that the 51-year-old legend has “incredible instincts for creating marketing spin.” He said, “he does it in a way that pushes the envelope but never too far and that’s why he’s the most loved athlete celebrity out there.”
