One made three-pointer. That’s all the Celtics needed in the final few minutes against the Knicks to shatter the Bucks’ record for most threes by a team in a single game. With the way they had been shooting all night, everyone was confident that they would achieve that feat easily. Surprisingly, they ended up missing their last 13 deep-range attempts and could not reach that coveted 30-threes mark. But what went wrong? Well, Jaylen Brown subtly hinted that part of the reason might have been the TD Garden crowd.
Addressing the missed opportunity after the game, JB said, “I didn’t know, but it was almost like we got jinxed or something.” For most of the game, the Celtics were playing their usual brand of basketball and not gunning for the record. That’s why they were so fluid all night and were able to tie the Bucks’ tally of 29 threes.
But things changed once becoming the lone record holder began looking like a real possibility to the home fans in the arena. “Then, once the crowd got into it and we started hunting them like we couldn’t even hit the bright side of the barn. Like everything was off. We got a bunch of great looks and it was like a lid on the basket,” Jaylen Brown said in the postgame presser.

Obviously, fans wanted to see their beloved side shatter the record, and they cheered and gasped every time the ball flew. That might’ve put added pressure on the players, resulting in them missing the shots in the final minutes. Even Jayson Tatum was left in shock after the game. “I’m surprised that we missed every three for the last 8 minutes, you know. We’re gonna be upset about that.”
But even though the Boston Celtics couldn’t hit their 30th bucket from deep range, the record still belongs to them as they are now tied with the Bucks. And it made JB’s night even more special.

Jaylen Brown looks back on historic opening night- “We did it”
Well, tying the three-point record was only the icing on the cake. The night was already historic prior to that because the Celtics raised their eighteenth banner to the rafters and the entire team received their championship ring ahead of the game. And Jaylen Brown looked back on it with pride, saying, “What an incredible night. Just the aura in the arena was amazing.” Moreover, there were several Celtics legends present at the TD Garden, including Kevin Garnett, to enjoy the moment.
Sure enough, it gave Jaylen Brown an amazing feeling, “It was almost like they were like passing the torch.”

More importantly, the hooper finally got to witness what he had been working for his entire career. “It’s great to watch that banner get raised.” And when asked about the part of the night that really hit him the most, he said, “I think like right before they called out the Celtics legends before they introduced them, it was just like at that time, it was just settling in. Me, JT, and Al were just like standing together and you know I could feel it.” That moment finally made Jaylen Brown realize, “Nah, we did it!”
