Jaylen Brown, last season’s Finals MVP and Boston Celtics superstar is changing the narrative of what an NBA star should be. The 28-year-old’s activities off the court make him stand out. He’s great at chess, can speak several languages, and even gave a lecture at the prestigious Harvard University. How many NBA stars can do all of this? Not many, that’s for sure.

Moreover, Brown has always been vocal about the importance of education and tried to make a positive impact in the community. A lot of this has to do with his upbringing. That’s what he discussed in an interview with Sports Illustrated. The Boston star recalled how much emphasis his mother and grandmother gave on his education while growing up, and they were not easy on young Jaylen, to say the least.

It was nonnegotiable anything below an ‘A’ was like unsatisfactory, but really was just like you need to be trying your best, and maybe if my best would have only been a ‘B’ they would have accepted that. But that wasn’t my best, so they didn’t accept anything less than an I didn’t get an ‘A.’ I didn’t get a ‘B’ until like high school.” Brown said. He further added that his grandmother used to make him study even during summertime when most of the kids were playing video games and stuff.

A good example of how much Brown’s family valued education is when the hooper selected UC Berkeley instead of attending a more traditional basketball powerhouse. Brown suggested it was a great experience for him to attend Berkeley as the school helped him expand his horizons, and he learned much more than just basketball. Apart from this insightful interview on Brown’s early days, he recently called it quits with his girlfriend, leaving several people surprised.
