His introduction resulted in a struggling stretch for them, but James Harden emerged as the catalyst behind the Los Angeles Clippers‘ surge. With Kawhi Leonard and Paul George on paper, they have been a contending team since 2019. However, it was only after Harden’s arrival that the full potential of the squad began manifesting. However, Harden’s entry came with its own set of concerns. Primarily due to his dented relationship with the Philadelphia 76ers, stemming from disagreements with then-coach Doc Rivers.
Speculation suggested that River and Harden had grown apart. This ultimately led to a strained bond with the franchise, resulting in his firm stance of being traded. However, Ty Lue puts an end to the narrative, bridging the gap between Harden and Rivers.

Rivers’ talked up James Harden to Ty Lue before his trade
While attending the media after the Clippers’ game against Doc’s new team, Lue was probed about the feedback he received from Rivers regarding Harden. Lue revealed he had extensive discussions with Doc before trading for Harden, who asserted James would be a perfect fit, deeming the move as “pretty much a no-brainer”. Lue then commended Harden for energizing the Clippers’ offense; mostly for handling the ball, executing numerous pick-and-rolls, and creating opportunities for the players on the court.

During Lue’s conversation with Doc, Rivers was separated from the coaching role with the 76ers. Interestingly, Rivers earlier marked Harden as the reason for his firing by the Sixers. Rivers’ current stint with the Milwaukee Bucks began mid-season, while he was working as a commentator in the league.

Lue also echoed that Rivers pointed out James Harden’s willingness to sacrifice for team success. With that, he claims that Harden does everything the team wants from him. Further, Lue points out that Harden’s impact can be seen in PG and Kawhi’s elevated shooting, as they have resorted to more spot-up jumpers in Harden’s presence.
Rivers and Harden have been brutally honest with each other
In October, before the start of the 2023-24 campaign, Rivers made a proactive stance to reshape the narratives behind his bond with James Harden. In hopes of being transparent, he shared candid insight. while doing so, Rivers shared that conversations between the two could sometimes get brutally honest; something very blunt and honest to a fault. Moreover, Rivers also addressed the slight shift in their dynamics. While Harden never admitted it, Rivers believes that being snubbed by the All-Star team bothered Harden. This prompted him to reassess his role with the team and in the league.
