Urban legends in the NBA are few and far between. One such instance is Jimmy Butler‘s notorious ‘Timberwolves Exit’ in 2018. It is a story that was widely covered by the media at the time.  Jimmy himself gave an interview about it minutes after it happened. The story goes that after the Timberwolves fell in 5 games to the Houston Rockets in the Playoffs in the 2017-18 season, Butler reportedly wanted a trade. However, that didn’t materialize.

What followed after is legendary according to some, but “bizarre” in general. The seven-time all-star was requested to participate in practices with the starting line-up, which he refused, saying he would be traded so he didn’t want to part-take. The front office pressured him to do it despite him refusing, so Jimmy went ballistic. He showed up to practice and beat the entire starting line-up with T-Wolves reserves.

Meanwhile, he called out the entire management with the general manager inside the practice facility. Several of those of the starters who were victims of Butler’s onslaught confirmed the story. Now Anthony Tolliver shares his side of that story.

Anthony Tolliver gives a firsthand account

Tolliver came forward with interesting facts from the time. “It was super awkward the entire time with him there because he didn’t want to be there. He’s a great guy. I still, even to this day, I’ve always said that Jimmy is the best leader I’ve ever played with. People might think that’s nuts because they saw him doing what he was doing,” said the power forward.

The 13-year NBA veteran also confirmed fans’ suspicions, saying, “It was accurately depicted, I guess is the best way to put it. Probably most of the things you’ve heard about it are true. I was there, for the whole thing. I haven’t really heard anything that was over-exaggerated, even like, wow.”

What’s even more epic is that Jimmy himself gave an interview to ESPN’s Rachel Nichols after cooking the entire starting line-up. Another member of the starting line-up also talked about witnessing that incident firsthand in the locker just after Jimmy had cooked them completely.

Jeff Teague reveals the locker room atmosphere

At the time, before anyone could start spreading the legend of what went down in the practice facility, Butler himself gave an interview about it. This shocked his teammates, as this would mean he had pre-planned the interview already, knowing he could single-handedly beat the entire line-up with third-stringers.

Jeff Teague, a member of that starting line-up, shared their unit’s shock after when they discovered Jimmy on television, “We keep playing, we have practice for like another hour. We all showering, we go in the locker room. ESPN pop up, you know what time it is. Rachel Nichols and Jimmy Butler on TV be like, ‘What though?’ He like, ‘Yeah, I just killed him at practice, you know.'”

He ended by showing nothing but respect for Butler. “He came and killed us and then did an interview at home. One of the most iconic moments I’ve ever been a part of in basketball, bro,” shared Teague. While Jimmy’s talents are never in question, a championship would add depth to this story. Do you think Butler is ‘Epic’ for this move?
