Klay Thompson's biggest regret isn't with the Warriors—does this change how you view his legacy?

As Klay Thompson looks forward to starting his new chapter in Dallas, do you think he will regret leaving the Warriors? As of now, there seem to be no regrets bigger than what he went through in high school. We’ve seen the Sea Captain score 60 points after oversleeping and missing practice. And we’ve also seen him score 37 in a quarter. However, in all these performances, Thompson did not play the role of a leader. It was either Steph or Green who facilitated the entire offense, yet Klay was the quiet and lethal shooter.

The reason behind his calmness goes back to his high school days. In fact, KT was always the quiet player on the team. Recently, he shared his insights on the game, teaching young hoopers valuable lessons to one day make it to the big leagues. A high schooler asked him what he would’ve done differently. While Thompson’s answer was full of insights, it was also filled with regret. “I was really shy. My coach always tried to get it out of me. I wish I would have used my voice more and it can be uncomfortable at times…”

“So when you do go back to your school, just try and lead as much as possible. Whether it’s by example or through your voice. I wish I did a better job of that instead of just like, kind of being in my own world. And I’m learning now but, yeah, that’s what I would say my regret is and not beating those two teams. Man, I could never beat that, Jordan Hamilton, damn it.”, Thompson said at the Hometown Favorites Camp. There is no doubt that Klay is still the quiet one on the team, but then again, in high school, his game made most of the noise.

Playing for the Santa Margarita Catholic High School, Thompson averaged 21 points as a senior, leading his team to the State Championship appearance with a 30-5 record. Apart from that, Klay has earned multiple honors, including Trinity League MVP, First-Team Best in the West, and more. As he mentioned, he also regrets not being able to beat Jordan Hamilton in high school. The duo belonged to the same Draft class, though just 5 years later, Hamilton took his talents to overseas professional basketball.

Even though Klay Thompson couldn’t beat his rival in high school, he certainly has had a better overall hoops career in the biggest league of the world. Regardless, the sharpshooter needs to start from scratch and has yet to make a lot of noise in Dallas.

Klay Thompson is headed for his 5th ring

Like it or not, Celtics fans, but the Mavericks now have a Klay Thompson. Outside of Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic, the Mavs did not have a scoring backup. Now, the squad has a third shooting threat on the team. Having three dominant scorers on the roster will become a problem for teams trying to guard the 3 All-Stars. With Luka taking control of the offense and having KT and Kai by his side, it’s quite literally a trap for any defense. Not to mention, they also have guys like PJ Washington, Gafford, and Jones Jr. near the paint.

Have an interesting take?

Are the Mavericks true Championship contenders for the upcoming season? For the most part, they are. However, it all depends on how they finish the season. It seems that the Mavs need only to worry about making the Top 6 in the West.

But what about the playoffs? Well, as seen from this past postseason, the Jason Kidd-led side’s playoff basketball switch is something to look out for. And given the addition of another All-Star, it will be interesting to watch Dallas in the next one. As the squad already kicked off their training routine, the Mavs look determined to win it all next season. Of course, they’ll have teams like the Wolves, the Nuggets, and the Thunder to worry about, but until then, a good regular season record could set the tone for a deep playoff run.

What are your thoughts on Klay Thompson teaming up with Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic? Do you think he can land another title under his name in Dallas? Let us know in the comments.
