The New Orleans Pelicans and Zion Williamson are finally living up to their potential. After underperforming for years, the Pelicans finally seem poised to make some noise in the playoffs. This season, they have emerged as a serious contender for one of the six guaranteed playoff spots in a fiercely competitive Western Conference. Moreover, Zion’s impressive displays have given Pelicans supporters optimism that their team can compete with the league’s elite.
They face the San Antonio Spurs in their next game. However, fans of the Pelicans face an anxious wait as the availability of Zion Williamson remains uncertain for tonight’s crunch match versus the Spurs. The Pelicans have listed Zion as questionable for tonight’s game due to left finger contusion. Williamson sustained this injury while trying to block a fast-break layup during a game against the Orlando Magic on Wednesday. However, he hit his finger on the backboard instead.

The absence of Williamson would be a huge blow for the Pelicans, especially at this crucial juncture of the season. However, Pelicans HC Willie Green might have alleviated some apprehensions regarding the severity of Zion’s injury. In an interview, Green said, “Z’s good. X-rays (were) negative. (On the) MRI, everything structurally was fine. He has some soreness in his finger.” Apart from Zion Williamson, the Pelicans would also miss the services of Brandon Ingram due to a knee injury.
Ingram hyper-extended his knee during a game against the Magic on 21st March. According to Shams Charania, BI would be re-evaluated later this week. New Orleans has also listed Jose Alvarado as “out” because of an oblique strain.

The San Antonio Spurs on the other hand are dealing with a multitude of injuries to key players as well. The Spurs would miss the services of Jeremy Sochan (ankle), Devin Vasell, and Cedi Osman (ankle) for the game against the Pelicans.
Zion Williamson’s likely chances
The New Orleans Pelicans have depended heavily on Zion’s performances this season, especially after Brandon Ingram’s knee injury. Williamson has become a talismanic figure for the Pelicans, leading them to the 7th spot in the Western Conference standings with his passing and offensive tactics coupled with impressive speed. Furthermore, Zion has remained incredibly healthy this season, missing only 11 games and contributing twelve 30 or more points.

In 65 matches, Zion Williamson has averaged 22.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 1 steal in 31 minutes of playing time. He has remained incredibly efficient from the field, recording a FG% of 58.1% this season. As for his clash against the Spurs, the power forward has averaged 24.3 points and stood by his rebounding strength with 9.9. Thus, while the Pels have listed Zion as questionable, he would more than likely play tonight, given the importance of the game; intensified by Wembanyama’s strong form arriving with 23 points and 15 rebounds from his previous game.
