When was Mo Wagner drafted into the NBA?
Moe Wagner’s NBA story began in 2018. On April 14 of that year, the German forward announced he would enter the NBA draft and hire an agent. By May, he had signed with Joe Branch of Roc Nation and received an invitation to the NBA Draft Combine. It didn’t take long for Wagner to catch the eye of one of the league’s most storied franchises, the Los Angeles Lakers.
On June 21, 2018, the Lakers selected Wagner as the 25th overall pick in the NBA draft, officially starting a new chapter in his career. Team President Magic Johnson and General Manager Rob Pelinka had high hopes for him, praising his versatility, basketball IQ, and ability to stretch the floor. Pelinka described him as a “tremendous passer and great screener in pick-and-roll situations,” making it clear the Lakers had a plan for the 6’11” forward.
Wagner, a lifelong basketball fan, couldn’t have been more excited to join the Lakers—especially as a big admirer of Kobe Bryant. “I am a big Kobe fan. I think I’ve got to go with Kobe,” he once said, highlighting his respect for Bryant’s loyalty and dedication to the Lakers.
A Promising Start with the Lakers
Wagner’s rookie season started with promise but was marred by injuries. During the Las Vegas Summer League, he suffered injuries to his left knee and ankle, sidelining him for weeks. Determined to bounce back, he worked hard during rehab and eventually made his G-League debut on November 3, scoring 17 points in 29 minutes.
