Is the NBA ownership dream slipping away for LeBron and Steph?

Throughout his Chicago Bulls stint, Michael Jordan has inspired numerous athletes beyond the NBA. His return to the league in 2010 as a majority owner of Charlotte Bobcats also had a significant impact on many. One of them is the Warriors leader, Stephen Curry. But LeBron James already called shotgun a couple of years ago. There were ongoing discussions about adding two new teams in the league which would have fulfilled both of their dreams. However, the NBA commissioner’s recent confession could very well shatter those dreams.

After the Board of Governors’ meeting, league commissioner Adam Silver took a seat at the podium on Tuesday to share the key highlights from the meeting. “There was not a lot of discussion in this meeting about expansion, but only largely not for lack of interest, it was that we had said to them that we’re not quite ready,” Silver informed. As per speculations, the league would expand by adding a team each from Seattle and Las Vegas. Seattle had already been catering to the Supersonics for nearly forty years before the new owners decided to shift to Oklahoma and change their names to Thunder. Since then the talks of forming a new team there were floating. Whereas, Las Vegas is an entirely new spot which would excite LeBron.

The estimated evaluation of these new teams is said to be around a whopping $6 billion each. The discussion of their implementation was supposed to be done once NBA’s media rights were finalized but unfortunately, it would seemingly remain on hold for now. “I know I’ve said this before, I think over time organizations should grow. It is appropriate,” Silver added. “But it gets a bit complicated in terms of selling equity in the league, what that means for the existing television relationships, etc. What we’ve told interested parties is thank you for your interest, we’ll be back to you. And that’s certainly the case in Seattle, as well.” From what the 62-year-old said, it is clear that LeBron and Curry have to hold their horses.

“I want to own a team in Vegas,” LeBron James stated two years ago. While having an intense discussion on “The Shop” the Lakers superstar hinted at his ambition. A majority might think LeBron was bluffing but there’s nothing that King James randomly says. That same year, in a presser held after a preseason game at Vegas, LeBron expressed his desire directly to Adam Silver.

When a reporter asked him about his experience, LeBron quickly labeled it as “the best fan base in the world.” The 20-time All-Star further added, “I would love to bring a team here… I want a team here Adam, thank you,” knowing that it would reach the commissioner who was in Abu Dhabi back then.

Recently Stephen Curry also made his intentions clear on CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street.” Inspired by MJ, the 3-pointer specialist expressed his desire to own a team in the league. Curry said, “For me, that’s definitely on the table.” Though Silver’s statement could be disheartening for potential buyers, there’s still time to fulfill their dreams once they retire. For the time being, LeBron and Curry would be focusing on their teams to get their hands on the 5th championship title before ending their glorious NBA careers.
