Hachimura said that it was a tough decision for him. The World Cup can be grueling and Rui wants to focus on preparing for the upcoming season and his NBA career.

In a press release, he says, I have made the decision to withdraw from this year’s FIBA ​​World Cup. It was a very difficult decision to make but after last season and the long playoffs”.

Hachimura’s decision comes as he is set to become a restricted free agent this summer. The Lakers have re-signed him in a 3-year deal. By not playing in the FIBA World Cup, Hachimura aims to be on foot for the upcoming NBA season. “I decided to give priority to my future NBA career in preparation for my first free agency,” he said.

His absence will be felt by Japan

Hachimura’s decision is undoubtedly a blow to Japan’s FIBA World Cup campaign. Japan is co-hosting the World Cup with the Philippines and Indonesia. The national team is trying to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Despite Hachimura’s absence, Japan’s coach Tom Hovasse remains confident that his team can achieve its goal.
