The Hornets are having another forgettable season. They have lost their last eight games and are among the bottom two teams in the East. Surely, they will hope to snap that losing steak tonight as they face the Pistons. However, that will be a massive challenge because they might have to play without their best player, LaMelo Ball.
Yes, LaMelo is questionable in suiting up tonight. The reason? A left ankle and right wrist sprain. Well, he has missed the last two games because of the dual injury. The latest report, however, now classifies the initial soreness as a sprain, which is concerning.

The Detroit Pistons will be without Jaden Ivey & Simone Fontecchio.
Unless recalled, Nick Smith Jr is still on assignment with the Greensboro Swarm.
Also of note, Cody Martin’s injury is now listed as a bone bruise, and LaMelo Ball’s as a sprain, previously just “soreness.” 🤔 pic.twitter.com/7HfP6yOTXp

Obviously, Ball’s absence would be a massive blow to the team because he has clearly been their best player, averaging a career-high 30.1 points and over 7.4 assists. Plus, he is not the only star dealing with injury concerns. Brandon Miller is also questionable and could miss his third straight game with a left ankle sprain. Moreover, he has only suited up in one of the last five games, which is another reason for the Hornets’ struggles.
Adding to the list, Cody Martin could also miss his third straight as he, too, is questionable. However, his injury has been changed to a left knee bone bruise. DaQuan Jeffries holds the same status because of the right adductor tightness. Meanwhile, Moussa Diabate, Nick Smith Jr., Isaiah Wong, Tre Mann (disc irritation), and Grant Williams (ACL) are all out because of injury or G League commitment. Well, that’s a long list of injured stars for the Hornets, which will make it extremely difficult to defeat the Pistons.
Hornets and Pistons’ Depth Chart
With LaMelo’s availability uncertain, this is what the Hornets’ Depth Chart looks like:
Position | Starters | 2nd | 3rd |
PG | LaMelo Ball (Q) | Vasilije Micic | Jared Rhoden |
SG | Brandon Miller (Q) | Seth Curry | DaQuan Jeffries (Q) |
SF | Josh Green | Cody Martin (Q) | KJ Simpson |
PF | Miles Bridges | Tidjane Salaun | Taj Gibson |
C | Mark Williams | Nick Richards |
Of course, they will face a major depth problem if the questionable stars do not show up to play, especially LaMelo Ball and Miller. In that case, Vasilije Micic and Seth Curry will probably replace them in the starting lineup.

However, the Hornets are not the only team dealing with injuries as this is what the Pistons’ Depth Chart looks like:
Position | Starters | 2nd | 3rd |
PG | Cade Cunningham | Marcus Sasser | Wendell Moore Jr. |
SG | Tim Hardaway Jr. | Malik Beasley | Daniss Jenkins |
SF | Ausar Thompson | Ronald Holland II | |

Obviously, the biggest blow is Jaden Ivey suffering a broken fibula in his left leg during the Magic clash. Sure enough, he underwent successful surgery and will be re-evaluated in four weeks. Moreover, Simone Fontecchio will also be unavailable tonight due to personal reasons. Meanwhile, Bobi Klintman, Cole Swider, and Alondes Williams are all out because of G League duty.
Well, these two sides have met twice this season, and both times, the Hornets came out on top. But they had LaMelo and Miller leading the charge for them. However, the Pistons could take revenge if the two stars don’t suit up tonight. Whose side are you on?
