Can the Timberwolves thrive without Randle, or is his presence crucial for their success?

Julius Randle’s availability for a game was probably the most asked question since last season. The big man suffered a shoulder dislocation, which restricted him to just 46 games. After missing a major chunk of the regular season and postseason with the NY Knicks, the injury forced the team to trade him out. Currently, the Minnesota Timberwolves, who traded him in for Karl-Anthony Towns, entrusted him with the front-court responsibility. After missing the first preseason game, will he make an appearance tonight?

Tonight’s preseason game is indeed an enticing match for fans from both sides. After the blockbuster Paul George trade, the Philadelphia 76ers are yet to make a full roster appearance on the court. On the other hand, the fans have yet to witness the Anthony Edwards – Julius Randle combo, as the duo missed the preseason opener against the Lakers due to minor injuries.

However, it looks like the fans still have to wait to witness the new combo. The injury report listed Randle in the Questionable category as he still recovers his shoulder surgery. A report that came out in September mid-week stated that the 29-year-old will return to the court at the start of the regular season, as per ESPN’s Chris Herring. So, fans may not witness the star power forward in action for the next five preseason games.

The 3x All-Star could have recovered from the injury much earlier had he opted for the surgery during the 2023-24 regular season. Following the shoulder dislocation, Randle waited in patience to recover from the injury without surgery. However, the star’s wait went in vain, as he finally underwent surgery in April. Almost 6 months have passed since the surgery, and Randle seems to have recovered from it, as he aims to return by October end.

Minnesota Timberwolves – Starting lineup and Depth chart

ESPN hasn’t updated the injury for the second preseason game, as Anthony Edwards and Julius Randle are still listed as Questionables. While Randle was listed as doubtful for the game due to his shoulder recovery, the team reasoned (rest) for Ant-Man’s absence. So, there are chances for the fans to witness the star shooting guard in tonight’s game. Leaving out Randle and Edwards, here is what the Wolves’ starting lineup and depth chart will look like.

In the first preseason game, without Anthony Edwards and Julius Randle, the Wolves went on to get a blowout win against the Lakers. And it was Luka Garza, Rob Dillingham, and Josh Minott, who put together 63 points, showing the team’s depth. On the other end, the 76ers have listed Joel Embiid as Questionable. So, the 76ers starting lineup might look like this: Tyrese Maxey, Kelly Oubre Jr. Paul George, Caleb Martin, and Andre Drummond.
