With superstars bagging bigger contracts than ever and even determining which team they play for, it’s truly the era of player empowerment in the NBA. And Shai Gilgeous-Alexander proved it with his latest move. After being represented by Thad Foucher of Wasserman Sports for the first six years of his career, SGA has finally decided to take complete control of his future by parting ways with him and serving as a self-agent.
Think about it for a moment and the impact this move could have. It’s got the potential to change the entire landscape of sports agents. At a time when agents take the steering wheel of most players, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander chose to ride his own car.
Among the many applauding this move is Celtics superstar Jaylen Brown. Reacting to Shai’s decision, JB tweeted, “Love This.”

Of course, besides being his peer, Brown is also the Vice President of the National Basketball Players Association and constantly advocates for player empowerment. But his reaction begs the question – Is Jaylen also self-represented like SGA? The answer is NO!
Although Brown “loved” the Thunder star’s move to go independent, agent Jason Glushon of Glushon Sports Management represents him. They have been together since 2019, and Glushon even played a major role in directing Brown’s contract negotiations with the Celtics. Yes, nearly two years ago, the duo met with team management and finalized a five-year $303.7 million supermax deal for JB. It became the richest NBA contract in history at the time.

So, it’s safe to say that the agency route has fared well for Brown. Apart from JB, Glushon represents many other stars, including Jrue Holiday, Al Horford, and Donte DiVincenzo. When Brown hired Jason six years ago, he said, “It’s just what’s best for me.”
But his praise for SGA has left the hoop community wondering…
NBA World has mixed reactions about Jaylen Brown “loving” Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s decision
Obviously, Brown’s comment left many thinking “JB Next?” referring to him potentially following in SGA’s footsteps. It could happen because, before hiring Jason, JB worked without an agent for the first three years of his career. And he could do it again now that his massive contract became secured. Moreover, one netizen loved the idea, claiming, “No max player should have an agent.”

Brown and SGA are superstars, so a max contract is practically guaranteed for these two superstars. So, it might not make sense to pay a commission to an agent, for finalizing a deal already on the table. But things don’t always go as expected, as one fan pointed out, “I think this would not work out well for most players.” Well, going independent is not an option for most players because of how unpredictable the NBA business is.

Even a player like Luka Doncic can get traded anytime without their knowledge. So, for someone who is not an established superstar, having an agent to watch their back is necessary. Meanwhile, one fan saw Brown’s reaction as an opportunity to add him to Rich Paul’s umbrella, “Nah Sign with Klutch, we family over here.” Of course, that is unlikely to happen because Brown seems loyal to Glushon.

Some fans even believed Brown praising SGA was a sign that he wants to join forces with the Thunder star, “Come to the O.” But JB’s happily tied to the Celtics for four more years, and unless things change, he will probably stay in Boston.
