When Jaylen Brown first stepped foot in the league as a part of the 2016 NBA drafts, everyone was excited to see what the Berkley star had to offer. Although people were excited, some had their apprehensions about Brown being “too smart” for the NBA and that he would eventually lose interest in basketball. So, how smart is Jaylen Brown exactly?

8 years since Brown entered the NBA, he has successfully taken the Celtics to the NBA Finals for the second time in his tenure. But in addition to this, the Celtics star has an equally impressive resume in the academic world. While Brown keeps rejecting this narrative, his interest in playing chess, learning foreign languages, and taking a graduate-level course during his first year of college speaks out just how keen he is to acquire knowledge.

But since he often attempts to downplay his ‘smart’ persona, his actions from July 2023 speak otherwise.

Did Jaylen Brown teach a class at MIT?

During the offseason, while other NBA players were enjoying their free days, or spending time with their families, the Celtics star was instead in an MIT Classroom. As part of a collaboration with the prestigious engineering institution’s Media Lab, Brown engaged in Robotics alongside the students of his Bridge Program. Founded by Jaylen Brown himself, it was the 7uice Foundation’s signature initiative that is dedicated to educating students of color about the importance of leadership, financial literacy, leadership etc. partnered up with the prestigious engineering institution to take part in a robotics session. It allowed the NBA Shooting guard to become an MIT Professor for just a few minutes. So, yes, technically he has taught a class at MIT.

Jaylen Brown was in MIT, right in the middle of a robotics class, when he learned that his agents had secured him the biggest contract in the history of the NBA. Topping the earlier record set by Nuggets star Nikola Jokic, Brown was set to sign a deal that would grant him $304 million over the next five years. With his Bridge students behind him, the player signed the contract within the walls of MIT itself.

And if that wasn’t enough to blow your minds, Jaylen Brown was even offered an internship with NASA, all thanks to his insatiable hunger for learning.

Jaylen Brown’s NASA connection

Jaylen Brown’s interest in physics led NASA to offer him an internship. But even when he did not take the internship up, he still managed to show up one day, learning about wavelengths of light that the Hubble Space Telescope can picture while touring the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. There, he even gave a presentation about the importance of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) engagement with two other members in the NASA team.

Brown wants to have dinner with Albert Einstein

There was a time when Jaylen Brown was invited to Harvard University to give a talk – “One and One with Jaylen Brown: Athlete and Intellectual”. This was taken up as an opportunity by GQ to cover his impressive feat, when they asked him if he could have dinner with any 3 historical figures, who would they be? Smart that he is, Brown’s answers were reflective of his personality. He said he would love to have dinner with Harriet Tubman, Nelson Mandela, Malcolm X, and Albert Einstein.

Of course, he would, considering how great he is at mathematics and sciences.

What other academic achievements does Jaylen Brown possess?

During his high school days, Jaylen Brown worked to balance out his basketball aspirations along with his education. The same worked out well, as the aspiring player ended up graduating top of his class. While he was given the option of taking his academic and playing skills to either Kentucky or Kansas, Brown decided to head to the University of South Carolina, one of the most academically progressive schools on the West Coast. During his freshman year, he undertook a masters-level course in Berkeley’s Cultural Studies of Sport in Education program.

Having been the captain of his middle-school chess team, Brown also expanded upon his experience by making the Varsity Chess team of his college. If all of this wasn’t enough, the college student/player also learned Spanish and Arabic during his brief tenure. He balanced out all of this while still being a member of the California Golden Bears men’s basketball team.

He joined the National Basketball Players Association (NBAPA), the labor union that works in favor of NBA players, and soon became its youngest vice president.

And when you do not see the Boston Celtics‘ star making hoops, you will find him in his zone studying philosophy and ancient history.
