After spending 2 years playing for Florida State, Devin Vassell declared himself for the 2020 NBA Draft. Even though teams weren’t lining up for his signature when he was coming out of high school, the same wasn’t true for the NBA Draft. He was swooped up quite early in the first round by the San Antonio Spurs, ending up as the 11th overall pick!
Vassell signed a rookie scale, $18.59 million contract with the Spurs on November 27, 2020. He made his NBA debut soon after. Devin recorded 3 points and 3 rebounds in his first game as the Spurs beat the Grizzlies handily. His highest-scoring game in his rookie year was against the Suns on April 17 when he scored 18 points in 25 minutes played. Devin also had 3 rebounds and 2 assists in that game.
Despite signing him, the Spurs could not improve upon their previous season. The 2020-21 season marked the first time in franchise history that the Spurs didn’t see postseason play in consecutive seasons. Vassell ended his rookie season averaging 5.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 0.9 assists per game. He played an average of 17 minutes over 62 games, mostly coming off the bench, only starting 7.

If you look back now, his stats in his rookie season are a far cry from the player he’s turned into! Averaging 19.5 points and starting the same number of games he played in his rookie season, Devin Vassell is now one of the most important players on the San Antonio Spurs roster.
