Does Karl-Anthony Towns' departure mark the end of an era for the Timberwolves?

“Do you like your family when they’re around all the time?” Chris Finch had a witty answer to give when someone asked why the Timberwolves players might get distracted when playing home games after a long time. In a sport like the NBA, players, coaches, and team management often hit the road, making occasional trips back home when they play in their franchise’s main arena. While the above-mentioned distractions may exist for Timberwolves stars like Anthony Edwards and Julius Randle, the same may not be an issue for the head coach.

Why? To know the answer to that, we need to know more about the 54-year-old’s family.

Is Chris Finch married?

Sadly, Chris Finch has never married throughout his life. As a result, he does not have any children either. In the 13 years that he has been in the spotlight as an NBA coach, including 3 as the head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves, he has reportedly never acknowledged the reason why he didn’t choose to get married.

In regards to his history, we know for a fact that Finch was born in Cambridge, Ohio, to Federal and Ellen Finch. He has a brother named Kevin Finch. None of the trio mention their whereabouts, and the coach himself hasn’t chosen to discuss the same in detail.

Finch began his basketball journey after graduating from Wilson High School. He attended Franklin & Marshall College, where he gained recognition for becoming a two-time All-American basketball player, in 1991 and 1992. Not choosing to opt for the NBA, Finch instead decided to play for the Sheffield Forgers (now Sheffield Sharks), a team that was part of the NBL (National Basketball League).

He would later begin his coaching career with the BBL’s (British Basketball League) Sheffield Sharks in 1997. This was the only team where he found some success, as Finch’s later tenure with the Giessen 46ers, Euphony Bree, Dexia Mons-Hainaut, and Rio Grande Valley Vipers were nothing memorable. Fortunately, the Houston Rockets decided to give the coach a chance in 2011. The rest, as they say, is history.

Chris Finch revealed seeing Karl-Anthony Towns in a Knicks uniform as being: “Like a death in the family”

One of the biggest news to come out of the 2024 offseason was the New York Knicks trading for Karl-Anthony Towns. While the Timberwolves did receive Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo, the change removed a major Center from the franchise. Someone who had formed a memorable partnership with Anthony Edwards during the previous season, allowing them to take the Timberwolves to the Conference Finals for the first time since 2004. Having been present right from the start when Anthony Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns started making waves, the head coach certainly did not feel impressed to see the duo break up.

The Timberwolves and the Knicks participated in a preseason matchup almost two weeks ago. When discussing how it felt competing against his old player, Chris Finch revealed, “It was a little weird for sure seeing him out there in a different uniform. Looks good on him. He played well. But, yeah, it’s like a death in the family in some ways. You got to make it through that first year, and everything is going to be a little odd.”
