Can Andrew Wiggins fill the void left by Curry and Green in the Warriors' lineup?

The Warriors are still waiting for their All-Star forward, Andrew Wiggins, to make his comeback. An illness that kept him out of training camp had also sidelined him during the Dubs’ perfect 3-0 record so far in preseason. However, that hasn’t stopped Coach Kerr from drawing up plans for the man who was a crucial part of their 2022 title run. And it seems like the 29-year-old might just be in time to enforce the same.

As opposed to previous updates from the Golden State, the latest news from Kerr, via Underdog NBA, is one of joy. Wiggins will be taking up the floor against the Lakers. “Kerr: Andrew Wiggins (illness) will make preseason debut on Tuesday.”

Considering previous updates were only possibilities, this confirmation is certainly welcome! As for tonight against the Pistons, aside from Wiggs, both Steph Curry and Draymond Green will remain out. They already had plans to rest the superstars for a night and with the Splash Brother’s jammed right index finger during the Kings’ game, tonight turned out to be the natural option.

Going back to Andrew Wiggins, there is no doubt that the Dubs are looking at the Canadian with the hope of stepping up without an established second option to Steph Curry. When KNBR host, John Dickinson, queried if he might “earn a starting spot by opening night,” Kerr replied, “Yeah he scrimmaged today w/the group that was available for that. … Absolutely, that’s still on the table.”

Furthermore, as mentioned above, GSW’s mastermind has already outlined what he’s looking for from Wiggs.

Since the insane 2022 championship run, the 2014 No. 1 pick has struggled to get back to that form. He has put up disappointing stats in the two years hence along with long absences. Of course, we now know it was due to his father’s illness. But at the time, it was understandably frustrating for the fans and a lot of criticism and blame flew his way for the Warriors’ underwhelming season.

However, Coach Kerr believes that with Wiggins able to take care of everything back home, he will be fully focused on basketball now. “If Wiggs has a sense of freedom and some peace of mind and his family behind him, which he always does, he’s an unbelievable human being and an incredible athlete, and he’s 29. He’s right in his prime,” Steve Kerr said recently to Kerith Burke of NBC Sports Bay Area.

Moreover, the Warriors coach also detailed his expectations from the Kansas alum. “To me, I’ve already told him: 6 3-pointers a game. … I want a lot of 3s and I want a lot of attacks to the rim. He shot 80-plus percent from the foul line in the second half of the year last year. … And let’s face it, with Klay gone, we need him to step up and be our second scorer after Steph, and we know he’s perfectly capable of that,” Steve Kerr said, admitting their gaping hole.
