Can Jamal Murray silence his critics and prove he's not 'easy to guard'?

Since the postseason last year, Jamal Murray has been unable to put his demons behind him. His theatric spirit or bravery hasn’t waned. However, his shooting woes have been palpable, going all the way into the Olympics.

It ignited an anonymous starter to say the 2023 champion is “easy to guard” at this juncture of his career. But tonight, that wasn’t the case. Murray went in his bag during a gritty win against the Brooklyn Nets.

The Nuggets, who are yet to find their defensive footing, waged an offensive war against the Brooklyn side without Ben Simmons. The influx of points came both ways, but in the end, a Nikola Jokic triple-double sealed the deal. Additionally, Murray played a great second fiddle, scoring 24 points, a season-high in four games.

Likewise, his crafty scoring maneuvers made it hard for the Nets to contain the Nuggets’ diverse offense. He added 24 points to the mix, including two three-pointers. After the game, reporters asked him about the comments from an NBA starter. The 27-year-old had to listen to it twice to believe someone said that about him.

When he finally believed it, Jamal Murray expectedly asked for the origin to make notes about the same. The anonymous nature upset him but the Nuggets guards used it to put things into perspective. “Well that’s why they are anonymous,” he said about the starter, signaling at them trying to possibly hide behind the shadows to avoid repercussions.

It’s unlikely that the NBA starter who launched those claims about Jamal Murray will make their identity known. However, the fans did have a field day reacting to the Nuggets’ vivacious scorer’s comments regarding the same. “boy was boutta torch whoever it was next game,” a fan felt. There have been suggestions that Murray’s jump shot faces a mechanical issue. However, the issue is bound to be rectified. Not only is the 27-year-old devoted to improving and refining his game, but he has incredible support in the form of coach Malone and the coaching staff within the Denver Nuggets.

As far as Murray urging for an identity, he did find some support. Lethal Shooter, a popular social media hooper and jump shot virtuoso, feels being transparent could benefit the game. “Stand on business and let him know who said it. Would make the game 10x better for us to watch,” he wrote.

In such surveys, it’s unlikely that any player would expose themselves. However, it isn’t a reach to think the experience would be better. In sports, tension can be an enormous factor that rears its ugly head. Some players decide to activate that switch, such as Anthony Edwards against Kyrie Irving. It’s a part of his confident persona and in the case of Ant-Man, even though he lost, he gave KAI his flowers and lived with the results.

But even without any identification, the NBA community felt Jamal Murray could assume that it was someone from the Los Angeles Lakers. This is due to his recent exploits against the Purple and Gold. “He is actually easy to guard until he plays the Lakers,” a member of the community expressed.

By no measure is Jamal Murray easy to contain, irrespective of the opponents. However, the Canadian does seem to enjoy matchups against the Lakers. During the 2023 WCF, he seemed to be a man on a mission. He averaged nearly 33 points in the series where the Nuggets swept the Lakers. It was more than the Joker or anyone else in the entire series. Maybe a clash against them will reignite his supreme form once again.

That, though, isn’t instilling great confidence within some of the Nuggets fandom. Given his erratic nature over the past few months, some fans seem ready to move on from him for the purpose of consistency. “Jamal acting like hes that guy, I want him traded to a more consistent pg,” one such comment read.

That isn’t the sentiment shared within the Nuggets locker. Malone has always spoken in support of Murray even when he is going through a rough slump. The expectation and belief is that he will bounce back. And those who have followed his Nuggets journey wishes for the same. “Lol the dude scored 24 and is in preseason form wait until he turns it on in February,” a fan warned the community.
