The NBA has paused the regular season for 24 hours. Yes, no games today! That’s because they want all the focus on Election Day, hoping every eligible citizen exercises their right to vote. While Adam Silver and Co. are not in business for the day, the league continues to make its voice heard through a special collaboration with multiple social media influencers.
Yes, aiming to raise awareness and encourage people to vote, the NBA sent out customized Voting Essential kits to several influencers. Sure enough, the influencers unboxed the kits on their respective Instagram accounts and spread the message “Our voice matters” to all their followers. The recipients included Liz Beecroft-Ridgway, a psychotherapist and the Founder of MENTL.SESH. But what was inside the kit?
In an Instagram reel shared by Liz, she unboxed it to disclose a timer counting down the time left to cast the vote. There were cards detailing the Voter eligibility criteria and a checklist for everyone to ensure the process becomes easier. Apart from that, there were also several goodies, including a pen and a water bottle. Obviously, there was a cap and a T-shirt with ‘VOTE’ written on top, similar to what we recently saw players wearing before games.

Obviously, conducting games today would have shifted focus from Election Day. Understanding how important it is to get the maximum number of people to the ballot, Adam Silver decided to take a day off from the regular season. But he was not alone in working toward that idea. Sure enough, NBPA President CJ McCollum worked with him to ensure that everyone, including players and team staff, got the appropriate break.

“It was important. It was something that [the NBPA] talked about and I was vocal about. There is an importance of us being able to spread information to others. It’s important for us to take the time off to make sure everybody goes out and votes and point a spotlight to that,” CJ recently remarked in an interview.
To sum up, it’s great to see the league contributing significantly towards the right cause. And don’t worry. The NBA will be back tomorrow.
