Is Myles Turner the key to Pacers' success, or should they let him walk in free agency?

As the Indiana Pacers prepare for the upcoming season, Myles Turner, drafted 11th overall in 2015, has become a vital player for the franchise over the years. Approaching a decade in the NBA, the franchise’s all-time leader in blocks, has his future being questioned by many. He signed a two-year contract extension in January 2023, which renegotiated the final year of his earlier deal. According to the CBA, he will become an unrestricted free agent next summer, since only contracts lasting 3 years or longer can be extended!

With him set to earn $19.9 million this season, Myles Turner has a strong advantage in negotiating a lucrative contract. Pacers GM, Chad Buchanan, addressed the increasingly pressing issue. “Myles obviously is all he knows the Pacers, and he’s a big part of our identity.” He emphasized the hooper’s contributions both on and off the court, noting, “It’s a big part by doing on the court; off the court, he’s great in the community.”

Chad Buchanan also threw light on Myles Turner’s crucial role as a rim protector, saying, “With our point guards, there was Pascal, I think you would see how seamlessly he fits into the way we play.” Looking ahead, the Pacers have clear aspirations for the upcoming season. After their inspiring run last season as the sixth seed, the team aims to build on that momentum, and Turner’s defensive capabilities will be vital. He averaged 17.1 points alongside a smidgen under 7 rebounds, and 2 blocks last season.

Chad Buchanan expressed confidence in Myles Turner’s development, stating, “He has been our starting center since we made the trade with Domas. He’s established himself in that role and continued to grow his play. I think there is still more growth with him.”

Despite this optimism, the looming free agency situation has created a sense of urgency. The Indiana Pacers recognize the risks of letting a player of Myles Turner’s caliber enter the open market, although the expectation is that he will stay put.

Myles Turner: A pillar of longevity and excellence with the Pacers

It’s true when Chad Buchanan called Turner a ‘big part of our identity.’ As he embarks on his 10th season, he becomes only the 5th player to spend a decade with the Pacers, joining legends like Reggie Miller and Rik Smits. “It’s a rarity that one player is with an organization as long as I’ve been here,” Turner reflected. “I definitely don’t take it for granted. I have a lot of love for the city.”

He solidified his importance during a successful 2023-24 campaign, showcasing a well-balanced offensive and defensive contribution with a 45.3% shooting accuracy from beyond the arc in the playoffs. With 1,268 career blocks, he’s the franchise’s all-time leader and continues to climb the leaderboards in games played and scoring. Just 16 games this season would place him sixth for most games played in Pacers history, positioning him to overtake Paul George and Reggie Miller in points and rebounds!

Chad Buchanan noted, “His development fits with system. He fits with our point guards. You see how he seamlessly fits into the way we play.” This versatility allows Tyrese Haliburton and Pascal Siakam to maximize their offensive potential. For example, in a game against the Warriors in March, his presence opened up lanes for Siakam, who scored 25 points and grabbed 16 rebounds. His effective screens allowed Haliburton to dish out 11 assists, showcasing how Turner enhances their synergy and overall team performance.

As Myles Turner enters this pivotal season, fans wonder how his legacy with the Pacers will evolve. With free agency looming, the front office has already made it clear, declaring, “We’re big believers in Myles. We want him to be here.”
