The Los Angeles Lakers are neck-deep in their search for a new head coach. Assessing multiple candidates, there were reports about them zeroing in on retired player JJ Redick. And many believed it was a done deal. However, in a shocking twist, new reports have emerged about Rob Pelinka and Co.’s piqued interest in UCONN’s head coach Dan Hurley. And the likeliness of him being offered a long-term contract to spearhead to the Lakers, making many wonder what Darvin Ham could have done differently to save his job.

Discussing Hurley’s potential hiring as the Purple and Gold‘s leader on 2 Pros and A Cup Of Joe, former football star LaVar Arrington claimed the LA side’s surprise interest in the UCONN coach could be a strategic move by LeBron! “This is LeBron James written all on it and it has ‘get my son to Lakers’ written all on it,” LaVar said. Hiring an experienced coach like Hurley who loves building from scratch could be a great situation for Bronny to develop himself at the pro level. Considering this strategic move, Arrington also made another bold claim, this time about Darvin Ham.

“Now it kind of makes you think like dang Darvin Ham all you had to do was draft Bronny and they might have given you another.” However, getting in the way of LeBron’s lifelong dream of teaming up with his son seems to have hurt Ham’s fate, “You said I’m not taking Bronny, they got you’re a** up out of there.” Meanwhile, we are yet to hear his side about the actual reason for his departure.

What does Dan Hurley bring to the table for LeBron James?

Despite Dan Hurley’s incredible resume at the collegiate level, he has never coached in the NBA or any pro level. So why are the Lakers suddenly interested in hiring him? Winning back-to-back NCAA titles with the UCONN Huskies, Hurley showed how great he is at his job. And considering that LeBron is also in favor of playing under Hurley, LaVar claimed it is a win-win for two major reasons, “Implement a dope a** offense immediately off the gate that could probably give him an opportunity to compete for another title.”

At the collegiate level, Hurley is known for his ability to design incredible offenses while also building a roster that suits the needs of a team perfectly. Even LeBron acknowledged Hurley’s incredible attention to detail when the UCONN head coach dissected his team’s offense during JJ Redick’s podcast earlier this year. An impressed James tweeted, “He’s so DAMN GOOD!!! Along with his staff. Super creative with their O! Love it.”

Meanwhile, the second reason is obviously setting up Bronny for success after LeBron retires. Amid all the criticism his son has faced for only getting this platform because of ‘the family name’, many believe that his profile fits perfectly to play under a coach like Hurley. With a zeal to prove everyone wrong and develop, Bronny could do wonders with Hurley’s guidance. And the Lakers will also get a coach who has Championship-winning experience and can help build their roster for the long-term.
