Is JJ Redick's laid-back attitude a strength or a weakness in the high-pressure Lakers environment?

Well, if you are looking for job security, the head coach of an NBA team might not be the way to go. While they get paid a handsome salary and are the guiding voice of the team during their tenure, it takes just one bad game to get laid off. Especially in today’s era when most teams are considered Championship or Bust. The Lakers are a prime example of that because Jeanie Buss has let go of multiple coaches during her tenure as the controlling owner. Sure enough, that means there might already be a sword hanging over JJ Redick’s head as he prepares for his rookie HC year. But the ex-sharpshooter is surprisingly not bothered by his ambiguous future.

During today’s interview, JJ Redick was asked if NBA head coaches’ short shelf life made him pause and reconsider taking the Lakers hot seat. He hilariously replied, “It didn’t register at all. I’ll probably get fired someday.”

Obviously, it is a possibility because the team’s previous head coach Darvin Ham was relieved of his services after only 2 seasons despite leading them to the Conference Finals and winning the inaugural in-season tournament.

JJ continued, “Chances are. (laughs) I hope not.”

At this point, it is clear that being associated with a storied franchise like the Lakers comes with a lot of pressure. The pressure to deliver. The pressure to win. And JJ Redick understands that it’s part of his new job. The last time the Lakers had a head coach who kept his job for over three seasons was Phil Jackson when he led them to two championships with Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol.

Since then, the Buss-led franchise has had seven different head coaches, with JJ Redick being the eighth and the most jaw-dropping choice for the community. While no one knows what the future holds for JJ, Jeanie has bestowed her trust in him, at least for now.

Jeanie Buss claimed JJ Redick is the ‘right person’ for the job

What’s your perspective on:

Is JJ Redick's laid-back attitude a strength or a weakness in the high-pressure Lakers environment?

Have an interesting take?

While JJ has never coached an NBA team, his experience as a player and his meteoric rise as a hoops analyst helped gain Jeanie Buss’ trust and land the Lakers job. The owner revealed exactly why she hired the ex-sharpshooter as the team’s new leader, saying, “We wanted to kind of think a different way. We were looking for a candidate that would bring something different and really invest in developing young players. JJ is the right person for us.”

For what it’s worth, JJ Redick has constantly said that while the Lakers will continue to pursue a championship, ‘player development’ will be a big part of his program. But if the rookie head coach is unable to deliver on his promise, there is also a possibility that he gets to hear about his firing during an interview the same way it happened for Frank Vogel two years ago.

Yes, even though the NBA veteran led the LA team to a championship in the Bubble, he was booted from his job only two seasons later. That too, without any notice. Surprisingly, his reaction to the sudden firing was caught on tape as he was informed about it during a post-game interview right after the Purple and Gold’s season ended. “My reaction is I haven’t been told s—,” he remarked, taken aback by the news. Hopefully, JJ Redick will not suffer the same harsh fate as the team’s previous head coaches.
