LeBron James made a stride in 2018 when he announced the opening of the Promise Schools. He promised $2 million in the first year and then other such grants followed from the LeBron James Family Foundation. While James is an active donor, the school is a public school that comes under the ambit of the Akron district. Therefore, they have the power to invoke an audit and examine the performance of a school on multiple levels.
The Akron Public School Board raised a lot of concerns regarding the Promise School. They revealed that no student from the eighth grade has passed the state test in the last three years.

As per Umar Rashad Ibn Abdullah-Johnson, LeBron James is not the one responsible for the current state of the IPS. Speaking on his YT channel, King Kong Consciousness, he opines, “First of all, LeBron James is not to be blamed. He is the only face and the name of the school. The LeBron James I Promise Academy of Akron, Ohio, is a public school. After repeating the same line, he continues, “Yes, they use his name, yes, he is the face. Yes, he contributes a lot of money and resources, but he is not in control.”
Then he tells who one could blame for the poor performances. The psychologist says that one can pin the blame on the Principal and the Superintendent of the school, both appointed by the school board itself. Johnson reiterates that LeBron James is only the face. He is not the decision-maker.
The Public Board utilizes his services as an idol who appeals to millions of young students and draws them to school. This school manages to handle at-risk adolescents and has been in place for just five years.
Using LBJ as a positive role model, the Board aimed to magnetize young kids to show up at school. Although Dr. Umar is a controversial figure, the points he made relate well to the details of the whole I Promise School saga. LBJ partnered with the public school board as an ambassador rather than being the administrator.
In the face of some strong criticism directed towards him, the Lakers phenom had some fun with his Heat and Cavaliers former teammate Dwyane Wade. What a way to blow off the steam!
