Are Stephen Curry's ankle injuries a ticking time bomb for the Warriors' championship hopes?

Fans held their breath as they watched Stephen Curry limp toward the locker room. It wouldn’t be surprising if one lost count of how many times the Warriors star had injured his ankle. The fear is that Curry’s ankle woes may be returning. The same struggles he had faced in the early years of his career. Only after multiple ankle surgeries and extensive rehab did he regain his momentum.

In a recent matchup against the LA Clippers, Curry injured his ankle in the third quarter. However, he was able to return to the game. Unfortunately, while playing in the fourth quarter, he hurt the same ankle again. Curry had his first ankle surgery in his second year in the league. Looking back, the 7th draft pick was considered a promising start, but soon, a string of ankle injuries began to cast doubts on his potential.

He missed his first two games as a rookie due to an ankle sprain. Fortunately, that was it. Averaging 17.5 points per game, Curry went on to have a solid season, playing in 80 games. However, his second season wasn’t as smooth.

He sprained his ankle in a preseason game and, despite a successful performance against the Houston Rockets, injured it again in the second game of the regular season. Curry’s ankle issues came in some of the most unpredictable ways. During the 2010-2011 season, he repeatedly sprained his right ankle. That saw him undergo his first surgery.

The procedure was performed by Dr. Bob Anderson in Charlotte, N.C. during the offseason. It was aimed to reattach torn ligaments and sidelined him for eight games.

But he could barely catch a break, spraining his right ankle again in a matchup against the Chicago Bulls. This time, it was shortly after returning from surgery. Fortunately, it was just a sprain. However, this was the beginning of yet another series of recurring ankle injuries.

Stephen Curry’s second ankle surgery

The 10x All-Star strained a tendon in his right foot on Feb 22, 2012. This had come after he had sprained his ankle thrice just that season. He saw limited playing minutes in the games that followed, until disaster struck again on March 10th.

That game was his last appearance of the season. Following this, he underwent a second ankle surgery to remove loose bodies and scar tissue. Former Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers described Curry’s injuries as scary. “He was turning his ankle in completely nontraditional, crazy ways. It was scary. I’d never seen someone sprain his ankle like that prior to Steph. And I haven’t seen it since,” Myers said.

The 4x NBA champ could see how these repetitive injuries might eventually take him down, and he wasn’t about to let that happen. “Steph was sick and tired of it. He said, ‘This ankle thing is not gonna be my life,’” Myers conveyed.

Apart from the surgery, a shift in his training regimen made a difference. Under the guidance of Keke Lyles, Curry underwent a major transformation. Yet, it’s happened again. A closer look reveals a concerning pattern of recurring injuries. The Warriors need Curry, and fans are anxious, hoping the injury is nothing more than a sprain.
