Can Caitlin Clark ever surpass NBA legends in assists, or is it just a pipe dream?

Losses or wins, Caitlin Clark seems to have a record to break or a player to surpass every other day. Then again, it was expected of the 22-year-old phenom. CC came into the league with a decorated college resume and a series of record-breaking performances. And she seemed intent on continuing, in what is expected to be a legendary WNBA career. As for the latest record she broke, Clark passed Alyssa Thomas to become the WNBA’s new single-season assists leader.

The Fever were once again against a familiar foe in the Aces. Although Indiana had to bow down to ‘Sin City,’ Caitlin made sure they had some kind of win. And the Iowa alum carried it out in the second quarter, with 3+ minutes left on the clock. On her way to the basket, Caitlin saw an open Kelsey Mitchell and passed the ball, who promptly drained it.

3:37 marked the exact moment Clark passed Thomas (316), with 317 assists. However, by the end of the game, her assist number increased to 321. But the rookie All-Star is not done yet. The Fever has two more regular season games remaining. Considering the young guard averages 8.4 assists per game, CC would have dished out, at the very least, 17 assists, if not more. By this calculation, it would put her total assists for a single season at 338.

A remarkable achievement, for sure. But if we were to compare her to some of the NBA’s assist leaders, how long do you think it would be before she reaches or surpasses them? Bear in mind that the WNBA has just 40 regular season games as opposed to the NBA’s 82. While you let that soak in, let’s slowly move to our first out of the top four.

Round 4: Caitlin Clark vs LeBron James

What’s your perspective on:

Can Caitlin Clark ever surpass NBA legends in assists, or is it just a pipe dream?

Have an interesting take?

Right, so we start with our very own all-time scorer, who right now ranks at No. 4 in assists. Per Statista, LeBron James has a total of 11,009 assists to date. Now, this is where it might get slightly tricky. Going by our above result of 338 assists to close out this season, Caitlin will have to play for at least 32 seasons to get past James on the all-time assists list.

However, the nearly 40-year-old is not done playing. In fact, the 3x Olympic gold medalist is still playing like it’s his prime! There’s no doubt that his assist number is going to increase in the foreseeable future. Oh! Not to forget the catch here – 82 regular season games. The least number of games he played in his career is 45. That’s still five games more than the WNBA.

Round 3: Clark vs Chris Paul

No. 3 on the assists leaders list is none other than the ‘Point God,’ Chris Paul. He currently has a total of 11,894 assists. It really shouldn’t come as a surprise, given that the man is a career 9.4 (per game) in assists. In addition, CP3 has led the league in assists five times in his career.

So, how long will Clark have to keep hustling to surpass the 19-year veteran? 34 seasons. If she’s lucky that, is. There’s no question about her hard work, skills, talent, and determination. So, all Caitlin Clark needs is a little luck. As for Paul, the man is an exceptional point guard with remarkable basketball IQ and insane ball-handling skills. More importantly, the ‘Lob City’ legend has extraordinary court vision – key traits necessary for finding open teammates or creating opportunities for them to get open.

Round 2: CC vs Jason Kidd

The shiny head of the Dallas Mavericks, JKidd is also a Mavs legend, leading the franchise to their first-ever title in 2011 alongside Dirk Nowitzki. Standing at 6’4, he had a size and strength advantage over the traditional point guards. This helped him gain a tactical advantage, see over defenders, and dish out timely assists.

By the time he retired as a player, Kidd already secured the second position in the all-time assists list, having racked up 12,091 assists. And how does Caitlin Clark fare here? It will take around 35 seasons for the 3x NCAA season assists leader to pass the now-51-year-old.

Round 1: Caitlin Clark vs the head honcho, John Stockton

The Utah legend, John Stockton, hung his boots in 2003. And yet, no one has come close to his 15,806 assists. Magic Johnson does have one over him in assists averaged per game (11.2 to Stockton’s 10.5), but that’s where it ends. The epitome of unselfishness, the Gonzaga alum was a pick-and-roll genius. His pick-and-roll partnership with Karl Malone is widely considered one of the most successful in NBA history.

He might not have been flashy with his passes, but Stockton sure made sure it landed in the right hand, at the right time, and at the most optimal position. Moreover, in his 19 seasons, the former 10x All-Star rarely missed games. No doubt that also contributed to accumulating these numbers. As for our Indianapolis favorite, Clark will have to play a long 46 seasons.
