However, the seven-time all-star turns 34 in the next season. At the cusp of his 12th season in the NBA, Lillard drops some wisdom, sharing quotes from a legendary poet on in his social media.

In a recent post on his Instagram, Damian Lillard decided to drop some wisdom regarding life. However, he chose the words of legendary poet John Ray Ryder titled “The Old Oak Tree”, which is also the caption of the post.

“Until today, I wasn?t sure of just how much I could endure. But now I?ve found with thanks to you, I?m stronger than I ever knew,”?reads the closing line of the poem by Ryder.

The words ring true to Damian Lillard’s situation. After being picked sixth overall in the 2012 NBA draft, Lillard persevered to become one of the greatest clutch players in the history of the league. Resulting in his inclusion in the 75th anniversary team last year.

Despite so many accolades, Dame is yet to capture the elusive championship ring. However, this offseason has brought a bit closer to his end goal. The poem being shared on his account is especially noteworthy as it comes hours after a special “promise”.

LeBron James is possibly the lone NBA player to excel at a high level at 38 years old. Despite skeptics claiming he’s at the end of his career, he continues to impress with his driving, shooting, and defensive abilities. Although Damian Lillard’s NBA career doesn’t match LeBron’s, he holds the belief that he, too, can maintain a high level of play when he reaches 38 years old.

According to Chris Manix of Sports Illustrated, ?I?ve shown no signs of slowing down… I’m going to be 38, moving the same way I move right now. I promise you. And shooting, that doesn?t go away?. In theory, Damian Lillard’s argument holds merit. Shooting skills tend to endure among NBA players, even as they approach the later stages of their careers, unlike athleticism.
