The Charlotte Hornets welcome the Philadelphia 76ers to the Spectrum Center tonight in a clash of two teams battling their own challenges. While the former hope to snap a five-game losing streak, the Sixers aim to build on their previous win against the Pistons. But it’s not as simple as that.

Both Charlotte and Philly are dealing with a bevy of injuries that leave them pretty shorthanded. And as such, there will be rotation adjustments to handle, essentially setting the stage for an intriguing matchup.

Injury report: Tough times for the Sixers and Hornets

It’s either injuries or load management for the 76ers this season. And right now, it’s a mix of both for Joel Embiid as he is on track to miss his fifth straight game due to left knee injury management and personal reasons as the team gets ready to face the Hornets. But that’s not all. The Sixers’ injury report lists at least five more key contributors absent or doubtful for tonight. Reggie Jackson (sore right knee), Caleb Martin (upper back soreness), and Kyle Lowry (right hip strain) are all ‘probable’.

And to add to Nick Nurse’s woes, joining Embiid on the sidelines is Andre Drummond due to a right ankle sprain. It essentially leaves significant gaps in Philadelphia’s rotation.

However, they do have Paul George and Tyrese Maxey on the floor. Furthermore, rookie Jared McCain has been nothing short of an X-factor for the squad. Having excelled as a scorer in recent weeks, it wouldn’t be surprising if he’s called on to take point guard duties. “That’s kind of new for him,” Coach Nurse had noted. However, the 76ers’ situation is dire. “There’s like no other point guards over there at the moment,” Nurse admitted.

Nonetheless, McCain seems only too happy to face the challenge head-on. “I always try to be myself, though, out there. I know how to score. That’s the main thing,” the 20-year-old said confidently. On the other side, the Hornets are equally under-staffed. LaMelo Ball (left calf), Miles Bridges (right knee), and Tre Mann (disc irritation) are all confirmed to be out.

Grant Williams, as you might be aware, had sustained a season-ending torn ACL in his right knee in a late November clash with the Bucks. That said, Mark Williams (left foot) and DaQuan Jeffries (right hand) are listed as ‘questionable’ vs the 76ers. However, one bright spot among all this is the return of Nick Richards.

The Charlotte center had been back on the floor over the weekend after a month-long hiatus due to a rib injury. Despite the obvious challenges, Charles Lee opts to be optimistic. “No matter who plays, and as we continue to get guys back. … We’re going to be the same competitive squad that’s going to go out and defend at a high level,” he said.

A look at the 76ers depth chart

Philly’s injuries have naturally shaken up their depth chart. Tyrese Maxey starts at point guard supported by a McCain, and a probable Jackson. Kelly Oubre Jr., for his part, leads the shooting guard position, with Lowry and Eric Gordon as backups. Unsurprisingly, PG takes his position at small forward, while power forward sees Martin joined by KJ Martin and Guerschon Yabusele as and when needed. And given Embiid is out, the center duties fall on Yabusele and Nigerian-Turkish forward, Adem Bona.

Despite the depth, the 76ers’ reliance on young talents like McCain and Council IV has highlighted their growing pains. With just four wins this season, consistency remains elusive for the team. But tonight’s matchup, scheduled to tip off at 7:00 PM ET, isn’t just about standings.
