Are Kyrie Irving's latest shoes a sign he's lost touch with his fanbase?

Probably the backlash for the ANTA Hela Sneakers wasn’t enough for Kyrie Irving. The Dallas Mavericks guard’s fashion and footwear ventures haven’t been so appealing to the fans lately. Therefore when sneak peeks of them popped up, there was nothing but disappointment in the air. Let’s go in chronology. First, Irving’s ANTA sneakers met with criticism following their first appearance on his recent visit to China. According to the supporters, the design was “horrible.” This uncalled-for outburst has left many in shock wondering if the design is truly out of place.

Meanwhile, Uncle Drew’s lifestyle collection with ANTA received some mixed reactions. The bold black, purple, burnt sienna and aquamarine outfits look great. However, someone pointed out that one of the fits looks like a “Sasuke cosplay” (Naruto reference). Meanwhile, another fan reminded others that the “younglings will like it.” The collection predominantly consists of oversized clothes which is the current fashion trend among the youth.

But, the latest problem is with the upcoming sneaker collection called KAI Runner. Following Kyrie Irving‘s sad departure from Nike, fans wondered if his footwear collection would ever return to the market. Well, they’ve returned, but it seems like fans’ preferences have changed. The NBA’s footwear news writer Nick DePaula, shared the first look of Kyrie Irving’s KAI Runner. One pair has a black base that incorporates an embroidered upper and full-length NitroEdge foam. Meanwhile, the second pair is a monochrome peach which also looks interesting.

However, the fans have taken X by storm to express their discontent over the upcoming venture. It remains a mystery which part of the shoes is ‘disturbing’- the color choice or the design in general. So, let’s see what the fans want to say about Mr. 4th Quarter‘s 2025 footwear collection.

Kyrie Irving faces flak as fans disapprove of the KAI Runner

Have an interesting take?

Irving’s Nike collaboration model, Kyrie 1 to Kyri 7 was one of the highest-grossing sneakers thanks to their designs and comfort. However, since his premature exit from the brand, the Mavs point guard has faced more flak than ever. Therefore when the KAI Runner’s first look was revealed the supporters turned into the biggest critics! One of the fans commented, “Hideously ugly, but I still love Kyrie.” Well, of course, given the marvel the Ankletaker can be on the parquet floor, how can anyone dislike him? But unfortunately, the same cannot be said about his new footwear collection, according to the fans.

Meanwhile, someone echoed similar emotions and commented with a simple yet harsh emoji. They said: “🤮” This makes us wonder if the KAI Runner models are truly as distasteful as the fans are expressing. Well, this isn’t the first time that such an episode is happening. The NBA history keeps repeating itself from time to time. In reality, Kobe Bryant’s Adidas Kobe 2 of 2007 was equally disliked. He faced backlash for failing to follow Michael Jordan’s style off the court like he does on the same.

But, there have been positive reactions as well. A fan said: “Need a pair fs.” This would bring a bit of joy to Kyrie Irving’s efforts. Our favorite hoopers undertake these collaborations meticulously, so when a project faces criticism, it’s surely disappointing. Thus, even if there is more pessimism, people like Irving would prefer to cling to the positive side while taking notes from the harsh comments.

Another fan called the KAI Runner “Fire.” Is that another speck of hope? Yes, it is. Amidst the hatred, some fans are welcoming Kyrie Irving’s efforts and thoughts for the shoes. Therefore, it’s only a matter of time before the models hit the market in 2025. Only the sale stats can determine if the shoes are truly disappointing or if some were simply overthinking the entire time.
