Donovan Mitchell and the Cavs had quite an eventful year. The franchise is looking at a bright future with its current assets in place. While Mitchell’s injury affected the team’s postseason run, it is safe to say that the Cavs are on the right track after a long time. His past two seasons with the Cavs were phenomenal, with the 2022-23  season being his career best. But recent reports state that there are considerable chances that Mitchell might leave the Cavs following the 2024-25 season. But why is that?

Well, Mitchell signed a five-year $163 million contract with the Jazz back in 2020. He will be under the same contract for the following season after which he’ll have the option to opt out. On the other hand, the Cavaliers are in the position of offering him an extension this summer. To be precise, Mitchell is eligible for a four-year $200 million max extension. However, if Spida refuses to sign the extension, there is a high possibility of the front office arranging a trade for Mitchell. Of course, if Cleveland doesn’t look to trade after Donovan ignores the max extension, they’ll lose the star guard for nothing. Whereas for teams that will be interested, the Miami Heat will be one of them.

The Heat’s star, Jimmy Butler reportedly wants a two-year max extension. However, considering that he’s missed about 110 games since he joined the Heat, it will be a tough decision for the front office to make. If the star isn’t offered an extension and looks to move on, Pat Riley can introduce a star from Cleveland, which he has done before. Trading for Donovon Mitchell would include giving away some crucial assets like Tyler Herro and Jaime Jaquez. Both played a crucial role in the playoffs, especially Jaquez, the young and upcoming star player.

Of course, these events will have to take place accordingly for the possible Mitchell trade. Nevertheless, how optimal would this trade be? For starters, Donovan spent a good five seasons in Utah. Teaming up with Gobert, the Jazz were hopeful of a successful franchise in the coming years. But as they built a team around their 2017 first-rounder, things took a turn. Mitchell’s trade was the turning point, which revealed a lot about the point guard.

How good of a fit will Donovan Mitchell be in Miami?

We’ve seen Donovan Mitchell pair up with players like Jordan Clarkson, Gobert, Mike Conely, and other assets. However, nothing worked for the Jazz. Compared to his recent postseason run alongside Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley, Donovan mixes pretty well with the bigs. In Miami, he’d play alongside Bam Adebayo, who is an exceptional big man taking care of his role on both ends of the floor. He will probably end up with a great squad in Miami, though Butler’s dominance was something else.

Both are great players, but Jimmy’s two dominant postseason runs led the Heat to the Finals. Would the Heat get the same from Donovan? Maybe, but at the end of the day, the front office should align with Butler’s desired extension. Mitchell left the postseason on a positive note as he looks to get back with even more determination. It will be interesting to see whether the Cavs offer Spida an extension.

What are your thoughts on Mitchell and the Cavs? Do you think they should offer him a max extension? Let us know in the comments.
