During every trade deadline period, some players emerge as key figures to watch- those who could shift the balance of power in the NBA. This season, all eyes will be on the Miami Heat and their six-time All-Star, Jimmy Butler. As per sources, the Heat star intends to decline his 2025 player option and hit free agency.
Although the Heat typically doesn’t trade away their star players, that could be the case unless they put the $113 million two-year contract on the table which Jimmy Buckets wants. But, it seems highly implausible and has left President Pat Riley with almost no choice but to seriously listen to offers for the 35-year-old superstar.
However, as tough as it may sound, Miami won’t make a deal that’s not to its liking. Pat Riley isn’t the man for rebuilds and David Aldridge of The Athletic suggests that the Heat wants players who can help them win now, instead of loading up on potential draft picks and young prospects who need development.

At this moment nothing serious has approached the Miami management but one thing seems to be true: Miami is open to negotiating. Of course, there is a chance that they hold onto the face of the franchise and challenge for the playoffs again, but unless they meet Butler’s ask, it seems far more likely that he will see a change in scenery soon.

Well, if Butler is destined to move away from Miami he has a wish list that includes the two Texas teams the Mavericks, and the Rockets, followed by the Warriors and the Suns as per ESPN’s Shams Charania. He claimed that these were potential landing spots for Heat star which were shared in league circles by Butler’s agent. However, Butler’s agent called it “utter made-up bulls***,“.
There has been a lot of chatter which first started when Jimmy Buckets did not sign a contract extension. At the minimum there is smoke. So, let’s weigh up these options as the next stage of Butler’s career. Starting with Dallas, Just the thought of Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving, and Jimmy Butler would get the Mavericks fans buzzing. However, before we let our minds run wild, how would they even pull off this deal financially?
The Mavs will have to give up a lot to even think of making this work. Next up, the Suns who could make some sense as Bradley Beal openly admitted Miami was his preferred destination prior to landing in Phoenix. So, he could be willing to make the switch but with a huge $161 three-year deal on his back, the Heat would happily see Butler leave a free agent instead of taking him. As for the Rockets, General Manager Rafael Stone has downplayed the possibility of trading for a star.

Lastly, the Warriors, now we’re talking! Butler’s grit, feel and intensity would naturally fit alongside Steph Curry and Draymond Green in Kerr’s system. As for the deal part hello! Andrew Wiggins and De’Anthony Melton plus some sweeteners and picks to make it happen. If Golden State cannot sweeten the pot with the picks it’s hard to see Pat Riley biting. Well, for now, all of these are mere speculations as only time will tell if Miami can hold onto Butler or will he end up somewhere else.
